High-end Z77 vs Low-end X79

Hey guys,

Time for the old socket 1155 vs 2011 discussion again! :D

So I'm planning to do a new build, called the "Black Beast": a pc in a 650D with all black components. At first I really wanted to use the Asus Z77 Sabertooth board. I know that the MSI MPower is slightly better, but come on... That Sabertooth is sexy as eff :D

The main purposes for the rig would be a bit of gaming (I don't really game that much anymore, but the games that I do play can be quite demanding), photo- and video editing and a bit of design (2d and 3d). I wanted to go for a nicely balanced rig, with a 3770k, 16GB Patriot Viper 2133Mhz, 60GB Samsung SSD for boot drive and an EVGA GTX 670 FTW.

However, yesterday I found out that a build with an i7 3820 and the Gigabyte UD3 X79 board would cost me about the same (€20,- less actually) and I figured that it'd be more "future proof" since that was the lowest end CPU in the socket, compared to the 3770k which is the highest end CPU in the socket.

What do you guys think? Do I need it? Do I not need it, but do you suggest it cause it costs the same? Please let me know!

Edit; Maybe a nice thing to add. I'm going for a small overclock to about 4GHz, using an H100i (:

Thanks,
Rick :)

Cant go wrong with either but me personally, I would go for the 1155 build and the Sabertooth. For one I think the Sabertooth is the best motherboard for any platform. Just love em. Second, the extra cores of the 2011 would come in handy for the video editing and all but the 3770K is just a better chip. Its faster in IPC and the HyperThreading will make it hang in there with the 6 core 2011 chips. Actually, looking at this Anandtech Bench comparison of a 3770K and 3820, the 3770K wins every single benchmark.

So for a slightly better processor and far better motherboard thatll handle any amount of abuse you want to throw at it, I vote 1155 and Sabertooth.

Also to point out, not sure how "future" proof it is. The new Haswell series due out uses a new socket solution, the 1150. So, I would get what works best for now, and the 3770k option gives you a lot more in the end then the 3820, IMHO...
