hey guys i`m new to these forums .
a quick question ?
i`ve a reasonably quiet gaming system , the loudest component is my old mechanical hard drive . can some please suggest a quite new one . preferably 7200 rpm and 1tb+ , cost not really a problem . i`ve got a 240 gb ssd with my system and a few games installed . so it`d be for storage of music , films and pics etc
thanks :)

Um, honestly there is no use in changing the hard drive itself just because it is loud. If you can and have the resources necesary ( space ) suspend it in elastic cords ( that's what I used for mine, and assuming that the noise is made by the vibrations the HDD sends troughout the case when it's reading/writing )

hi thanks for the info .... but , I have a fairly small case which doesn't really have room for your good idea , the 2 drives I'm using are fairly old , and mounted on rubber gromets . there doesn't seem to be vibrating noise , more of fairly loud hum from the motor spinning the platters :-/

Hi! You're very welcome! :)
Yes I have the same problem with my Hard Drive which is not very new... the actual read/write noise is annoying but the humming noise ( coming from the constantly spinning motor ) is unbareable. I mounted mine unde my optical drive, it has plenty of space and it's very silent. If you want and can, post a pic with the inside of your case and we'll figure out together a place to mount it if there is any. :)

Welcome to the OC3D forums mate =)

I know that Akasa makes some ODD-HDD adapters that includes some solid vibration dampeners.
This link is from a norwegian website but you should get the idea:

With it comes rubber that you put inbetween the mount and the HDD.

I'm using 3 of these for all my HDD's and I couldn't have been happier =)

Hi thanks all :)
i already have anti vibration rubber mounts on my drives .
to be fair i have 2 old 500gb units a Western Digital caviar and a seagate and i want to put them in a different pc where noise isn`t an issue and the data not important ( kids gaming machine )
so i`m really looking for an upgrade to a quiet single 1tb+
i`m grateful for the the replies and all .......... but is there such a thing as a quite mechanical drive ??
