Heyy guys,

It is my birthday soon, well tomorrow actually the 23rd april and will have £100 spare so i am hoping to upgrade my Intel pentium dual core CPU to a quad core AMD processor and the Motherboard , As you would have guessed my budget is around £100, So here is my question...., what AMD CPU that clocks around 3.4 + GHZ ish and what motherboard would be best for my price range but looks like a nice motherboard ? , I'm hoping to get a motherboard that can Hold 8GB DDR3 RAM but hoping i can get one that will hold 16GB DDR3 RAM for future proofing as i produce and develop videos as well as gaming, My Price range for the processor and motherboard is around £100 and looking for quad core AMD processor plus a motherboard that looks stylish / GOOD

Comments are much appreciated as not sure what CPU'S are ok with what boards (altho the motherboard and CPU'S state what they are compatible with)

Many Thanks, Drew :D

If i'm honest I would save your money for now. the cheapest one i could find on aria is the fx 4100 which is bulldozer (old) and is 75 quid. The fx 6300 (where they start to get decent) is 100 quid ish by itself.

Which socket is the Intel dual core? If I'm not mistaken and you have a newer dual core, it could open up some options such as maybe a used 2500k..? :/

Failing that, go used and get a phenom ii x4 + 760g board, probably the best you'll get for your money. I also have a 760g motherboard + my current CPU I'd be willing to sell your for around that price (negotiable) if you made a thread in FS&W

That would be Socket 1155.

To the OP, don't buy used PC products.. Such a huge gamble, especially considering if you're buying from a person, and not a store. Used products don't have RMA or money back policies, and can quite often even be faulty. To get a CPU and Motherboard for £100 is definitely tricky, unless if you went with a really crappy APU, which I wouldn't advise at all, the best for your money would probably be what I linked above. Which is a Quad Core @ 3.2GHz, which is practically what you asked for anyway.

If I'm right and he has one of these 1155 dual cores, wouldn't it make much more sense to root around for a used i5, or maybe a i3 2100..?

You do? What did he mean then? I'm confused lol.

@Inspire, if he were to get an i3 I'd say go with a 3220 over anything else. But to answer your question, no. Not necessarily. If he could pick up an i5 for the same price as the Athon II I linked, then sure why not. But buying any used product is a major risk, and I wouldn't advise it at all to anyone. I once bought a 2600k From an add on GumTree, guy had many positive reps etc, when I received and opened the box, he'd actually switched the i7 with a Celeron G550, or some Celeron CPU, I can't remember which exact one. But the point stands. Plus, faulty or not, I can't imagine finding a used i5 for under £60. (Need's to be £60- to allow cost of Motherboard) and that's another thing I certainly wouldn't buy used.

The OP said he had an intel pentium, he never mentioned the model or the socket. iBeInspire said that if he was using this one, Intel CPU Pentium G860 Socket 1155 Dual Core, then he could upgrade to a better chip on that socket, ie the 2500k.

I was thinking he could just get a i5 2500k if he already had ANY 1155 motherboard. Personally I've never had any problems with used products (my motherboard was bought 2nd hand for a bargain, still going strong 2 years down the line) and as a student I don't have much cash laying around, I know what it's like to not be able to get the very best... or anywhere near it xPP

Anyways, @OP, after all this I'd still suggest going second hand (phenom ii x4 + 760G board), or if you share views with ''Lakers'' follow his advice :)
