Help with OC'ing

Hi, I have finished installing my new system, and i think i have made a mistake buying the A8R-MVP. I have been tinkering with the BIOS settings, and sometimes the CPU speed drops??? (i cant increase Vcore past 1.4V but there is a setting to enable VCore overclock). I have read many different reviews about the HTT and the such, but even on the overclock profile ASUS provide (preset overclock values) of 30% it wont boot. I have a 3700+ SD and 2Gb Corsair PC3200. I'm on Overclock profile 20% and with the water cooling system the temps are still at 33^C. Can anyone help, point me in the right direction or give me any advice (appart from telling me i shouldnt have bought the A8r-MVP, lol)

Many thanks in advance

(And if i have chose the wrong mobo can someone perhaps suggest a good OC'able mobo that has PCI-E as i have the HIS X800 GTO)

I have already disabled cool'n'quiet, heard that would interfere with overclocking, will have a look at thermal throttling when i get home (not that im posting on here when i should be working or anything!? lol) Thanks for the help, will post back after i've done that.

Do NOT use ASUS's overclock profile thing. It has been proven to suck and cause instability. If you're going to do any overclocking, just do it yourself.

Also don't try imediatly increasing the voltage, this can sometimes actually hurt your overclock.

Still no luck

Have turned off the settings mentioned, and tried tinkering with the bios. I get 2.6Ghz out of it, any higher and it wont boot :banghead: (and at 2.6 the VCore is still 1.41ish). (Had a hairy CMOS clearing moment too). Can I just say thanks to everyone for the help, its awesome to be helped, not patronised like with other forums. I have contacted ebuyer where I bought the board, and whether or not it is a recurring problem i dont know but without even a second thought they have exchanged my mobo for a proper OC'able board

-->DFI virgin I am no more! :hands: (it arrives wednesday)....Shall post back again when I get stuck on that one, lol

Thanks again

You do realise that a vcore of 1.4 is not very high don't you?

Have you made sure your running your RAM on the lowest divider so that you can rule that out of the equation?

yeh that was the problem, the overclock couldnt get any further cos the processor wasnt being given enough power. Thats the trouble with this Mobo, u cant increase the Vcore, only "enable Vcore overclock" (which doesnt appear to do anything). Also for any reason the mobo doesnt like the settings when it boots, it completely changes them, and i have ended up with an underclock. I can increase memory voltage, but not the Vcore. Sucks huh?! I have done the RAM, and its copes fine. Thanks for the response

DFI LanParty UT RDX200 CF-DR

Ok had a look around, and wanted a board that could be used to crossfire (once the price of the graphics card i want drops).

I'm now starting to wonder perhaps switching to DFI may not have been such a good idea; i keep getting blue screens, i have formatted my HDD and tried installing windows XP. It gets as far as copying the files and then develops problems. There are so much more settings to change in the BIOS can anyone give me a quick crash course in any known problems with this board. (Meanwhile i'll keep searching, nothing has shown up as of yet)

Graphics (HIS X800GTO IceQII 256Mb)

AMD 3700+ San Diego (11*200)

Memory (2Gb Corsair PC3200) <-- Some thing came up about RAM i am going to try some other RAM and see what happens apparently i need to set the memory timings to 3-3-3-8 (as auto wont work) but which bios settings do i change? the only one i recognise is CAS to RAS?

Sorry for the long post, thanks to anyone who can help

DFI boards are VERY picky. Check DFI Street forums out - they have a load of sticky's about their boards which are like 100% helpful :)
