my missus has finally come to her senses and allowed me to upgrade her pc. sshe has my old system, amd phenom 2 x2 550be. asus m5a97pro, amd 5770, and no ssd.

i have talked her into letting me fit an ssd. and i want to upgrade the cpu. going intel would be ideal, but not affordable.

so. i need a decent quad core amd cpu for less than £100, please help

edit: have decided to just go for an i3 2120 system, dunno what mobo yet. but gonna just get her out of the amd chain,

not sure, she has since done a LFR on wow and decided that she doesnt need an upgrade.... bu i think im just gonna do it anyway!!! how do people get by without upgrading!!

I'd go for the Ivy Bridge i3. It runs cool and quiet, it is power efficient and it beats the quad core AMD and previous i3 gen in performance too. Stick it in a Gigabyte z77-D3H and you are golden for about £170. I'd steer clear of some other budget z77 boards like the MSI g43 and 41. They seem to have scrimped to bring the z77 chipset to the budget table and even stock performance is noticeably lacking. That really shouldn't be the case. The D3H could even get you a decent enough overclock (~4.5 depending on chip) if you ever invested in a K series chip and a cooler down the line.

Does your mobo support core unlocking?
There could be 2 good cores already there for you to use.

the mobo does suport this function, that is why i used the mobo when upgrading from a ddr2 mobo. but it didnt work. so i thought i woud just go for BD, but it flopped, so i gave the rig to me missus and built my 2500k system back in january, it still runs ok, and she is now back to saying im not allowed to upgrade it.... damn she can be stubborn sometimes,
