What is better (performance) and cheaper for my money. I am NOT going to overclock.

Intel Core i7-950

Intel Core i5-2500

AMD Phenom II X4 970

AMD Phenom II X6 1100T

Also when it comes to Threads in CPU do they make much of a difference ?

Cause the i7 950 has 4 cores but 8 threads were as the i5 2500 has 4 cores and only 4 threads

Gaming and for general use

i would actually say any one of those will do. The 2500 will probably be the best bet at stock, since you aren't overclocking I don't see much sense in getting a 950 or an AMD Black-Edition CPU. Do you have any particular reason, why you don't want to overclock? Especially with Sandy Bridge it is really easy to push the clocks. Think about it dude, it's 15 bugs more for a 2500K and then you would only have to get a decent cooler.

you should learn to overclock its really not that hard... especially on a 1090t or a K series processor... be confident

i would say the 2500, but with the intel problem with SB you're probably gonna have to wait. the 950 is a great processor, and paired with a good motherboard you cant really go wrong. I have a 920 and a sabertooth x58 and it does whatever i want it to. AMD makes good processors, and the price is also quite nice. If you are not worried about money, go for the 950. The build might cost a little more, but you will end up with a great system. If you're on a budget, get the x4 970 and spend a bit more on the graphics card.
