Hello OC3D!

I recently decided to make a change and switch from Apple back to a Windows based PC. I bought a Mac Pro around 4 years ago (and then three years ago, and then two years ago and.....), so I've grown tired of upgrading my entire computer simply because I'd like to have that new video card and/or processor. That said, I decided that I would build my own computer. I'm starting law school in a few days, so I figured I'd need a computer with an immense amount of power in order to process those word documents a bit faster -- and maybe play some of my favorite games at max spec on the side. At-least that's the justification I give myself.

On top of that, I'm a tinkerer and I wanted something that I could have an immense amount of fun overclocking since I missed out on that due to an "incompatible" platform. After doing a bit of research on the i7-990x and the 2600k, I came across TTLs reviews on YouTube. His review of the 990x solidified my purchase of this fun little treat, and lead me to these forums (which I've been lurking on for the past couple weeks). Anyway, that's enough chit-chat out of me for a bit -- on to the juicy bits.

Here is what I came up with:

  • Case: Corsair Obsidian 800D (this may turn into a Caselabs case pretty soon -- maybe the M8?)
  • Power Supply: Corsair AX1200
  • Motherboard: eVGA Classified 3 e770
  • Processor: Intel i7-990x @4.6Ghz 200x23 (Remained stable after a couple hours of Prime95 with temps in the low to mid 50s). I want to get 5.0Ghz out of it stable, but I apparently don't know enough to do that just yet. I can get into Windows at 5.0+, but that's about it.
  • Graphics Card(s): eVGA GTX 590 (#2 should be arriving on Thursday)
  • Memory: 12GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600
  • Fans: 3x 140mm Scythe Slipstream (to replace the awful stock corsair fans) and 3x 120mm Scythe Slipstreams in the top.
  • Fan Controllers: 2x Scythe Kaze Masters to keep the fans quiet.
  • OS Drive: 120gb OCZ Vertex 3 Max-IOPS
  • Everything else drives: 4x 1TB Western Digital RE4s in Raid5

Liquid Kooling:

  • Koolance ERM-3K3UC with 10mm (3/8") ID tubing
  • Koolance CPU-370 Waterblock
  • Koolance 2x VID-NX590 Waterblocks
  • Koolance VL3N-F10S Female Quick Disconnects
  • Koolance VL3N-MG Male Quick Disconnects
  • I'm contemplating cooling the board as well, but I'd have to go elsewhere to find a full coverage block (unless I switch boards)

Anyway, I think that's about it. I love the forums, and they've been an immense amount of help so far, so I figured with all the lurking I've done I could just register and be a bit more social -- and maybe get into folding. I'll throw a few pictures up sometime tomorrow afternoon to show my progress thus far. I need the sunlight to compensate for the horrible lighting in my office
