Hello from an ex i286 4Mhz owner

Hi All,

My first PC was a self-built powerhouse system as follows.

CPU - Intel 286 4Mhz (no its not a typo)

Memory - 1MB (4 x 256MB. One MB of RAM was around £200)

Graphics - Hercules Mono (well… it had one colour – Green)

FD - 720MB (3.5”) and 560MB (5.25”)

HD - 20GB (same size was being used by many businesses)

O/S – DR-DOS v3.2 (Digital Research version of a Disk Operating System)

Later I added a super fast 9.6Kbs modem and this baby performed to spec by downloading a 1MB file in ONLY 3 days! R.I.P.

Those were the days... moving on, I have been doing a lot of research during the past 4 weeks for a new build, based around the Intel X48 chipset and water-cooling.

I have custom built over 600 PC’s/Servers for home and professional users, but I’m only just beginning to learn about over-clocking and water-cooling, so expect a few novice questions.

I'm not sure you'll notice much of a difference between your 286 and a Core2Duo tbh. You might be better spending the money elsewhere....

NOT

Welcome to OC3D :)

Tox don't be rude :whack: lol

Welcome to OC3D SYDDOS. Make sure you post plenty of pics when you're building your new rig :)

Kempez. I guess you miss your 286 as much as I do.

Jim, Toxcity, ionicle. I wonder if anyone will admit to owning a core2Duo 10-20 years from now?

PV5150. Will post the pics once I source the components.

Thank you all for the welcome.

Welcome aboard mate!! I am still fond of my very first computer, it was a Commodore PET 8032 that packed a whopping 1mhz MOS 6502 proccy and 32k of RAM. What a

Hi FragTek, I remember the Amstrad, Commodore 64, BBC and the Sinclair Spectrum battle, and refused to get involved until the IBM compatible in the form of the i286 CPU was released.

The only reason I have fond memories of my i286, is because it took me a year to save the pennies to complete the build, and I spent most of that year memorising about 80-90% of DR DOS syntax. When the build was complete, I would spend hours just typing in the command line instructions (mouse not yet invented) just to see the results.

Hi jiffz & Mr. Smith, thanks for the welcome. I have spent many hours on this and other OC sites to get a feel of the problems and to get clued-up on the technical aspects... I have still got a lot to learn.

Hi chudley :wavey:
