Hd7970 vs gtx680

Hello guys,

I'm not asking for a comparison of these cards, just wanna know who's the best if I do this!

So, the GTX680 has kinda this: (not talking about OC editions)
1025MHz core clock
6000MHz Memory clock
1500 cores
2GB VRAM
And the HD7970 has this:
925MHz core clock
5500MHz Memory clock
2000 cores
3GB VRAM

So if I just manualy OC the HD7970 to 1000MHz and the memory clock to 6000MHz, than I'm winning 1GB VRAM and 500 Stream Processors?

Of course I need the ability to OC it, on the internet I saw the HD7970 is pretty good OC, and my case can handle it I think?

Now just one thing, isn't NVidia better?
Because I had a HD6990, a 3000 processor card!
This should be much better than the GTX680 and HD7970 according to there specs!
But I'm just getting 30FPS in AC3.
What I learned out of this, buying the HD6990... that the technology of ATI isn't that what it needs to be.
And yes, I know the HD6990 is a dual GPU and single GPU is most of all better.
But still the GTX690 is also dual GPU and there aren't big issues so far as I know.

So according my plan to OC the HD7970, this should be a better choice IN SPECS???
But I just wanna be shure that when I'm playing AC3, I'm not getting average 30FPS with an ATI card.
So my conclusion is that the HD7970 OC on my way is better :), but I'm still having it in my mind that I ever bought an 700€ ATI card and it just didn't work correctly on some games!!!

Thanks and sorry for my english

OK. I will try and answer this as quickly as possible.

The 7970, by all accounts, is the faster card now thanks to? some late drivers that made it perform as it should.

However, AMD drivers suck. They always have and they always will. That is why their cards are cheaper.

I bought a 7970 at launch and was so miffed at the horrendous driver bugs that I sold it, returned to Nvidia and vowed never to use another AMD card as long as I lived.

A friend of mine bought a 7970 two days ago only to find that these later drivers break all of the DX9 titles he likes to play. He really should have remembered his experiences with the 7950 he bought with me at launch.

So there you have it I guess. You pays your money and makes your choice but personally speaking I now fully understand why Nvidia products come at a premium.

But what do you mean that ATI drivers suck.
do they generally perform lower or is it just what I had?
That it sucks on some games.

LOL AMD drivers suck.... YAWN!

What was the last AMD card you had the X1900XT? My 7970 performs admirably, handles ANY game at max at 1080p.

All the bollocks about AMD drivers is rubbish, the latest Catalyst drivers are getting better and better. The 7970 outperforms the 680 is most games.

OP I'd suggest the 7970 1GHz edition, they perform better at stock and tend to have better OC capability. Don't listen to fanboys, #nVidyaSWAG. MY 7970 is my favourite card next to the 8800GT

But if you watch to this hes right maybe.
On almost every game the GTX680 performs better than the HD7970.
Or is the GTX680 better without my OC plan.
Also watch the HD6990, sometimes there's a game were it performs verry low
instead of the GTX590 that's also a dual GPU card.

Spoken by some one who finds it hard to be objective?

It's nothing to do with me being a fanboy, it's fact. I would have AMD gpus had they worked properly. Instead I lost a ton of money selling them on.

Such a fan boy am I that I pointed out that with the latest drivers they are faster than their Nvidia counterparts.

You can't compare the clock speeds/processor/memory/etcetetc of two different cards.

example:

the stock core clock of a gtx580 is somehting like 872 mhz. The stock core clock of a HD7770 is ~1000mhz. The 580 utterly destroys the 7770.

Actually no it was an XFX R7970. See pic.

Which was nothing but problems from the off. I should have known it coming from a 6970 Lightning that too was no end of bother.

Hilariously I actually have proof of the sort of issues I experienced with AMD's drivers.

Tell me does that look normal to you? Thought not.

I bought a GTX 670 straight after that and haven't been back to AMD since. I won't, either. Bloody n00bs. Google around for the latest drivers and the DX9 bugs that stop DX9 titles working properly.

It's all good if you're a benchmark whore of course, but I actually like to sit down and game on my PC. Their drivers are the worst I've ever used bar none. I've gone back to ATI and AMD time and time again and every time I do I have nothing but issues with their cards. Barring the 9200 Pro I owned in about 2003 of course, that was the only card with no issues from them.

Ok so the GTX 680 is a good choice???
And what's the other guy saying about my PSU? what's wrong with that??

One persons experience with a 7970 doesn't give a fair comparison the majority of people who use their 7970s, 7950's etc without issue. They are good cards, OC very well even with reference coolers, are excellent bang for buck. I'm not getting involved in petty fan boy arguments, I've owned cards from both parties and like them both. I've owned cards since GeForce 2 and the R500 days, right up to 560Ti and the 7970... I have no preference for either, I'm impartial, I'll buy the best value card at the time and AMD got there first with the 7970.

With the latest Catalyst drivers possible, since the day I bought it, I haven't had issues with random crashing, blue screens etc, Catalyst might not have the sheen that Nividia drivers do, but they are still solid performers.

I'm not getting involved in petty fan boy arguments.

The problem is you are. Right in your first post to me you accuse me of being an Nvidia fanboy.

The OP asked a question - I answered it. The 7970 is now the quicker card* but note that the drivers can be buggy.

* which just emphasises my point. Had the drivers been good then the 7000 series would have performed as they do now on launch.

Sadly to gain that performance AMD have broken other things.

I'm not even saying Nvidia drivers are perfect as they're not. My point is that Nvidia cards are far less problematic from my experience and it's a lot. I've owned an awful lot of both and IMO Nvidia cards are worth the premium.

And that's not even bringing 3D into this, because AMD's idea of 3D leaves an awful lot to be desired.

But energy is energy right.

no

voltage is supplied at 12v plus a ripple. Too much ripple kills things.

crappy oem psus have higher ripple.

They also usually fudge the figures by having a bajillion amps on a rail like the 5v and bugger all on the 12v where they're more needed, while still maintaining the ability to call it a '800w psu!'

lol i love it when someone asks about 680 vs 7970 it always gets heated :)

I wouldn't say it's heated. Certainly not from here any way.

But let's face it - there has to be a down side to a GPU that is considerably cheaper than its rival yet still people avoid it.

I had the same problem as you , amd/nvida. I don't have a lot of cash but spent months saving, could not afford another psu only got a 550watt. Spent a lot of time looking and saw a zotac gtx660ti ampt (5 year warr as well) could get away with 550 watt psu, all of the amd's needed a bigger psu/power therefore for me the Zotac won hands down. You do not hear about many problems with Nvida drivers but I am always reading about amd's driver problems. By the way why do you need such a large PSU? you are running a i53570cpu which requires less power than my little old Q6600, strange anyway good luck with your search.
