I know this is an older card, but i had repaired 6 of them for someone (he cant pay me for the parts or work so for payment he said i could keep 2 and a PSU to run them), with cooler problems, however i wanted to run them on something other than on pci card extenders.
The main thing is on the Mobo i have , Maximus V Extreme, the sata ports sit too high for the card to sit anywhere. is it just due to the fact they are double stacked? or was this a common card issue with this card?

ah i was thinking that,
so just look for vertical ports on a board and i should be fine building at least one of these into a cheap gaming rig for my dad

going with any ITX board would enable you to fit 1 in there

Or you can go 1155 where most boards were like that. The P8Z77-V LX has been proven to be a real work horse
And it fits the CrossfireX specs for 1 PCIe 16x and 1PCIe 4x
Throw an 1550 i5 there and your gaming machine will be ready

yeah probs will run a single 5970 other wise thats 4 gpu's and crossfire wont scale too well, he rarely plays modern titles anyways only just got him into 1080 gaming lol

I was looking at the pentium anniversary build with the ranger board those sata ports look a little to tall again but that card does go past them im thinking id have that same issue...

Quadfire with a pair of 5970s often works very well.

The biggest problem with the cards these days is the 1gb VRAM per GPU which can be a real pain.

Yeah im lucky they have 2gb of vram per card but i just want a mobo, that i can guarantee wont interfere with the Sata ports (would not fit on my Maximus V Extreme)

One card should be fine for him, was looking at the ranger with the the Pent anniversary chip 8gb of 1866mhz norm ram.

Unless you can think of a reason for 2 of those gpus. cos even 2gb of vram at 1080p for 2 gpus is not alot esp with some of these games now lol
