Hd 6970 Heat issues.

Hey there people I have a problem. I have installed an 800w atx novatech power supply, a noctua NH-D14 and a HD6970 to my existing pc.

The case has one mesh side and 1push+1Pull fan. The card does fine on Lost Planet Bench on max settings. I ran 8 in a row with no problem. However when I play a game (Cities 2011 or COD MW2) it runs for 10 min then the whole pc trips. I checked a few times and the card is VERY HOT each time.

Can the GFX card overheating trip te whole pc? What is a safe max temp for a HD6970??

This is annoying and any help will be much appreciated;)

Cheers Ron

...what are the temps its giving off? maybe somthing else that is the issue?

The system ram is all set right times, freq and volts in BIOS I assume? that can cause crashes..have you OC the CPU at all?

The 800w psu should handle that all fine and I assume its new from 'installed'

If all fails and it is the card send it back

Hmmm well I did put in 1066 Kingston ram which I had to change the bios for to make it run 1067. I have oc'd the processor to 3.4ghz it's the 940 BE and it's (200/17x) it runs at 34* max normally. With he noctua.

The PSU is new out the box and works fine through the max DX11 Lost Planet.

I have seen a max temp of 87* on the HD6970.

Do I have to change the voltage on the ram?? I left it on auto and changed from 800mhz to 1066mhz by replacing ram.

I will show you CPUZ dump, but on my phone. Give me a min.

Thanks I appreciate your help in this.

i would realy realy get a different PSU the psu you have is not very good and its something you should not scrimp on.

IMO get a differnet PSU

Here is the sad thing, wallet is empty after the whole Mesh computers being a rubbish company fiasco so for now I have to get by with the one I've got. Just hope mesh pull their finger out their A55. Then I can get one but they've had my cash for over 2 months now so can we try make the rest work with what I have. The GFX card was thanks to an amazing friend and the noctua was my partner so my last £36 went on the PSU.

I will save up though and buy a decent one asap.

So can we make this lot work??

Thanks for your input though;)

Your ram timings are 5-7-7-24? what is the the ram? Dont use auto, and set the timings and MHz in BIOS to what the modules say they do

might not sort the prob but auto on my board is retarded..

Im a noob to most things however i do know that alot of ATI cards have a 9X* shutoff point and YES it will reboot your entire system to save itself.

If your temps are so close to the shutoff point then RMA, if thats not an option take it apart and make sure there isnt dust or somthing caught in the heat fins clean off thermal paste and reaply a fresh coating.

Similar problems with my 6950, though I have unlocked it to 6970 settings. Temps go as high as 93-94 degree C. Still tryin to find max safe temps for both AMD cards, but not much headway there.

Do read my post on 6950 card & go thru the replies. It may help

powercolor have told me that 95c is safe max for the 6970 , not sure about the 6950 sorry . my 6970 was hitting 99c but it had loose screws which hold the heatsink etc , swapped the thermal paste and it does not go over 88-89c

I am a supernoob so any input always adds to my knowledge:)

I'd be uncomfortable taking my card apart. But it's sitting at 89* c so may not need it.

could anybody talk me through the ram settings?? I went into BIOS for the first time ever 2weeks ago. I know nothing about timings or voltages:(

I wouldn't even know when to start

Thanks again

Thanks again everyone I appreciate the support. I am going to need a bit of flaying to change the RAM power and timings.

I'm still a noob but I can read so will give it my best shot

You overdosed the processor? is it alright?

Read the first page of the PDF, stick the timings to 5-5-5-18 instead of leaving it on auto which the 1.8v

Well you know that's how I roll

I know this sounds like I'm very dumb but I don't really understand timings and voltage. How do I change the timings?? Will changing the timings adjust the voltage??

I am in the bios now and I am looking at giberish

it means nothing to me :S)

Hi guys, ok so an update, I think I fixed it. I think the overclock on the CPU was the issue. I removed the OC and it hasn't tripped since. Now I think I know what the main issue was. I don't know how to do the voltage for the oc. I had the CPU at 3.6Ghz on AUTO voltage. Now I've pulled back the OC to 3.2ghz and it's not tripping. How do I work out the voltage it needs for an overclock??

Thnx again:)
