Hard Drives & Noise

I need a recommendation for a quiet hard drive. I remember the Samsung Spinpoints were good for sound, but are getting old.

Seagate has recently released the 7200.10 which is also a contender - anyone know what drive is the best to go for? :?

The Samsungs are still the quietest, and are a good price.

The 7200.10 series with 16MB cache have the edge in terms of performance over all the other 7200 spindle speed disks, and, althought they`re not *as* quiet as the Spinpoints, are not loud. :)

Samsung have a new drive out, tbh the Seagates are SLIGHTLY faster, but still noisier than the Samsungs

most of the noise is vibration, if your concerned about noise, id definitely suggest suspending the drives

2.5mm "ish" thick "elastic shock cord" from ebay and suspend em in the 5,25" bays (im doing mine this week coming (i got 4mm cord, and its fairly thick, JUST fits in the lian-li cage holes) - 2 x 120gb Seagate SATAs (7200.7, very quiet drives)

my friend is a quiet pc nut, he's got a 320gb seagate he says he can't hear it, he was kinda sick of the samsung unreliability, they kept going BANG! literally a really loud bang, and then fizzled out of existence. i've got some of those silentmaxx 5.25 silencers, they're great.

Hehe, i'll get you guys some pic's of my ghetto'ness.

I use elastic bands :) A hard drive which is suspended is very very quiet. As a reference point I found a standard mounted Spinpoint loud...

Oh and check out Storage Review for info on drives!

Cheers for the info - the drive is being fitted in a SFF so is all pretty tight. The loudest component is the hard drive so I'm replacing it with hopefully a quieter one! Just not too sure with what to go with.

The 80GB Spinpoint is looking tempting...
