Greetings everyone!
Just wanted to let everyone know that I recently come across a new indie game that I would have otherwise passed up, but a good friend recommended it and I decided to give it a try. All things considered, I found it to be quite the good time sink/relaxing pass time non-engaging Battle Arena with elements from, if I dare find the similarity, Freelancer.
Before I continue, here's the site - https://play-gar.com/
The game basically starts with you (a robot) being dropped off in a garage which doubles as a maintenance shop. You're given the option to go through a detailed tutorial that really does help you get somewhat more familiar and at ease with the game, especially helpful in the current beta stage of development. As you get more familiar with the game, the fun starts. You create your robot in the garage using various parts, you have the choice of different chassis (heavy, medium and light with different slots, movement speeds and so on), weapons, energy batteries (as some weapons use energy rather than ammunition), various appearance perks more. The better you are in the different arenas, the more credits you earn and the better equipment you can buy - including a moving up in the ladder, of course. Which is sadly rather underpopulated at the moment, but I have hopes that that will change. Achievements, a wide range of rewards and personal bonuses are currently in development alongside the game play changes striving to better balance the game.
Some of you might be worried that the game would be unforgiving to new arrivals, but you get matched up with people who have reached a roughly similar stage in their robot's development/the ladder - I was worried myself but it didn't turn out as bad as I thought it would. I mentioned that GaR is still in its beta stages and that happens to be one of the most positive things about the game. The developer feedback on the game's boards is one of the better ones that I've seen. Most, if not all, threads receive direct feedback including the staff sending out personal messages and the suggestions provided are, if good, usually implemented and tested with relatively frequent updates on the main page.
I can talk and try to explain more and more, though I believe a video is in order by now. You can see how the targeting system works (left/right click for your left/right cannons and keyboard buttons to toggle the weapons systems on/off), the maps and the currently implemented movement system. There's a short teaser of the game provided by the studio itself, a company called "Masthead Studios", and without further ado, here's the clip:
The game has a lot of potential I believe as it's still an infant and I'd like to see it grow, perhaps not as some of those AAA titles, but at least get a steadily increasing flow of population to show the studio their work's being acknowledged and give them the community support to see it to its end.
For anyone interested, the game is absolutely F2P, has a relatively small download size of ~550MB's, whenever the servers are down you are warned in advance and all-in-all I'm hoping that I've brought to your attention something "unique" in the current ocean of same old same old - there's barely been a big -game lately that has not been the sequel of some successful AAA title.
