GTX 980 pictured?

Images of what appears to be a GTX 980 reference card have been published on the internet earlier today. Nvidia appears to be using the Titan Z backplate (a backplate!) and the images show a total of 2 x 6 pin connectors, to go with the energy efficient Maxwell architecture.

The images appeared on Videocardz.com, a well known source for images and information about upcoming GPUs and cards. They show a card with Nvidia's reference cooler, the same one used on the GTX 780 Ti and Titan Black Edition, with the black cooling fins that are visible through a little window in the shroud.

The reference card will only have two 6 pin power connectors and no 8 pin, however we might see 8 pin connectors on the aftermarket cards for overclockers. The two 6 pin connectors and PCI-E slot combined will supply a maximum of 225 Watts, which is quite low for a flagship video card.

The low power draw on such a high end card makes some people believe that the GPU wasn't manufactured on the standard 28nm.

The card is sporting Samsung K4G41325FC-HC28 memory chips with a total capacity of 4GB and has a different layout compared to previous Nvidia models. As far as the I/O goes, it is said that the card will support HDMI, DVI and 3 Displayports, although images of this are not available.

According to earlier rumours, Nvidia will announce the card on September 19th, 2014.

I wish they got a bit inspirational with those cards..each has same looks only different name written..maybe that works best for cooling but..ppl like to see (at least i do) some difference, some style in their cards..take a look at ARES..its gorgeous..I would sure love that 980 alot more if they changed the armor on it,added some different cooling style or SOMETHING!

I still like the style the ref coolers are. IMHO i think they have never looked better. SO they can stay for me :p

well if ya dont like seeing those back plates, you could always invert the motherboard. I kinda like the look of the stock cooler.

I actually don't mind the backplate. It's simple and I think still better looking than a naked PCB

I don't really like that backplate, especially since it looks like its not an entirely solid black colour. Why cant they just make a plain, black backplate, with an Nvidia logo if they are feeling extra spiffy?

I agree with this. Whilst I don't mind the backplate and still think it's an improvement over a naked PCB, I do think they could've done a better job of it. It looks kinda dated and I think a clean black brushed aluminium style or something would look better. Weird considering Nvidia have done such a good job the last few years with the design of their stock coolers
