Images of what appears to be a GTX 980 reference card have been published on the internet earlier today. Nvidia appears to be using the Titan Z backplate (a backplate!) and the images show a total of 2 x 6 pin connectors, to go with the energy efficient Maxwell architecture.
The images appeared on Videocardz.com, a well known source for images and information about upcoming GPUs and cards. They show a card with Nvidia's reference cooler, the same one used on the GTX 780 Ti and Titan Black Edition, with the black cooling fins that are visible through a little window in the shroud.
The reference card will only have two 6 pin power connectors and no 8 pin, however we might see 8 pin connectors on the aftermarket cards for overclockers. The two 6 pin connectors and PCI-E slot combined will supply a maximum of 225 Watts, which is quite low for a flagship video card.
The low power draw on such a high end card makes some people believe that the GPU wasn't manufactured on the standard 28nm.
The card is sporting Samsung K4G41325FC-HC28 memory chips with a total capacity of 4GB and has a different layout compared to previous Nvidia models. As far as the I/O goes, it is said that the card will support HDMI, DVI and 3 Displayports, although images of this are not available.
According to earlier rumours, Nvidia will announce the card on September 19th, 2014.
