Nvidia GTX880???

Well here we go again, and as we know leaks happen and rumours escalate, only this time we are being drip fed what is believed to be an engineering sample of the upcoming GeForce GTX 880... Well is it really?

So lets take a real good look at the leaked images, the first thing I focused on were the GDDR5 chips mmmm I do like chips, but these old 2013 Hynix H5GQ4H24MFR-RC2 chips are not to be scoffed at, these 7.0Gbps 512MB double-sided modules really add some high resolution crunching muscle with a maximum of 8GB on this particular "Sample".

Now we should focus on the GPU die itself, well we sort of knew this was coming but what would the allocation number be, GM210 or GM204??? Well if rumours are true with yet more leaked information via a Taiwan shipping manifest these are believed to be Part # GM204-A1... but all we really know from the leaked images is that this particular die was manufactured on the 21st week of 2014 (1421A1).

Well onto Power and by the looks of the PCIe power sockets, she needs juice! 375W by my estimation with 2x 6pin & 1x 8pin, tells me that this card will be no slouch in the performance department.

PCB Connectivity we see the usual PCIe slot and we also see 3way & 4way SLI support.

Anyway not really much more to say as it's just a leaked (oops) engineering "Sample".
So what do we think?

It looks relatively legit, although you can never be sure. However even if it is an Engineering sample, that doesn't necessarily mean it'll be coming soon.

Anyway, my prediction for how the GTX 880 will play out:

* Nvidia will release it and charge through the nose for it
* AMD will release their updated cards and undercut Nvidia by a large amount
* Nvidia will follow with large price cuts

That's if Nvidia are first with their next generation of cards, if not swap Nvidia with AMD in those three points.

That has to be wrong? A 290 is 275w TDP.

Actually, afaik they always put a few extra power connectors on the engineering samples for testing purposes. If it's anything like the 750 Ti, which is also Maxwell, it won't consume nearly as much power.

I hope so, 375w would be pretty ridiculous to be honest :lol:

The only thing we can see from AMD at the moment are the new Kaveri APUs and for some reason a newer 280 & 280X sized wedge which will fit in between the current 280, 280X and 290, 290X

This is very true but I'm only focused on this sample, who knows though it may carry the extra socket for some overclocking goodness..

Thanks bud, I did have all the leaked Shipping manifest images back in May but decided not to report on it as it wasn't really "important" enough, I needed more evidence. With other review sites speculating rather than actually studying the images for real details, I figured I'd do something different, unlike Tweektown who claim it has 16GB of Vram... :huh: should have gone to spec savers. :lol:

The whole time I was putting this together in the back of my mind I'm thinking, I bet WYP has already beat me to it... :lol:

I had found this a few days ago , but without any real information there wasn't much I could write about it.

Great find on the vram thing, didn't think of looking that up. Showed me a thing or two about what to search for when it comes to these type of leaks!

From what I can see its more likely to be a 285/285x as opposed to replacing them. If they do replace them thats the second time I've had an AMD card that has had a new chip version a few months after I bought it :I.

It'll be like the 7870 was I think. 280x Hawaii or the such ( based on the 7870 Tahiti naming).

colossal step back. Even if they found a better way to cool it it is still a lot of heat that will have to go somewhere most likely your case, so even if the GPU stays cool something is gonna feel the heat.

Even a triple slot with one fan wouldn't be enough, the Titan Z is 375w TDP and the cooler on that can't cool it sufficiently. Not without being loud and having to lower the clock speed anyway.

They would need to do a dual fan or even triple fan cooler, unless they want to copy what AMD did with the reference 290s

Make a hotter card and then cool it with a blower, then add a few 00's to make up the lose of sales.

I'm pretty sure that the TDP is wrong, surly it can't be that hot?
