First of all, i am not a biased consumer, i buy based upon the price/performance.
I was extremely lucky, and grabbed an EVGA GTX 480 at 175 quid brand spanking new, where as the competitive 5870 was almost double the cost.
I have never owned a better GPU in my entire life.
Nvidia did something right, even though they failed to get power requirements down to a more reasonable level, and use their brains with the cooler design.
The GTX 480 is an absolute brute in every shape and form, it is an absolute tank in performance, and just carries on going, even when Vram limited!
I did a video of AVP DX11 but does not show the real FPS, as it is recorded at 100% quality at the native resolutions that were presented in game with MSI afterburner, the FPS difference from no recording is around 10-20fps drop off, apart from the 3180x2160, where it mattered less due to the GPU being so over encumbered due to the 1536MB of Vram.
Nvidia did it correctly with Fermi, and the only reason it was not so "WOW look at that" at launch, is due to the release drivers, and laziness from the engineer team with that hellish looking cooler. Also the absolute mass of ATi/AMD fans had had their say and painted a ridiculous picture of the 480 to innocent lookers wanting a new GPU.
The 480 under the exact same vapour chamber cooler that the GTX 580 uses, would produce less heat than the 580 does, the 580 is in fact a hotter GPU with an adequate cooler design to cope.
I am just sharing my very happy time with the GTX 480, an absolute beast, and the staying power over 3 years shows!
I will upgrade one day, but seriously, there is nothing on the market worth the time or money.
Fermi is the perfect design for DX11 titles, it is so strong in DX11, it makes the ATi 5xxx and 6xxx series look like lego blocks...
The 480 demolishes the 5870 in everything, and continues to devour the 6950-6970 in some DX11 titles at stock clocks, once overclocked, it beats both series of GPU's with flying colours.
My exact sample of the GTX 480 is 3 years old, and matches up to the latest AMD card Radeon 7950 with an OC of 880mhz on the core, and 4ghz memory although not in every title, but in a lot of games.
I have a video uploading of 4K res with the GTX 480 maxed out in AVP, stick around for it
