GTX 465, GTS 250 or HD5770

Hi guys, first of all I have an gt8800 1gb ddr3.

Im looking for a new video card. But im not sure which one will be better, I mean I can find the gts250(ddr3) in my country (1 year warranty) or I can import the gtx465(ddr5) (without warranty). I know the gtx is better, but is there really a big difference? Because in the past I had a couple of problems with my video cards and I had to use the warranty, thats why im so affraid.

In the other hand I can buy a HD5770(ddr5) for the same price as the gts250, but I had bad experiences with ati's, have they got any better? I will use it just to watch movies and play transformers :)

BTW do you know if linux have support for this ATI's cards? With nvidia they work just fine :)

Hope you can help me out guys.

Thanks!

there is a massive difference between the cards mate but your best bet is to go with a GTX460 instead it doesnt suffer any of the problems the 465 does as that cards got the same GF100 chip as the gtx480 so it makes tons of heat and sucks the juice like nothing, where as the gtx460 is on a new revision GF104 chip and doesnt suffer from those issue not to mention its a total bargin here it starts off at £139.99 for an oem and £145 upwards for a brand name the best of them atm being the asus's 460 with the volt tweak and you can overclock the teeth off it to match a gtx470 ;)

not sure about linux support with ati cards but that 5770 is a brilliant card 2 of them in xfire sometimes match up to ati's fastest single gpu card out :D

GTX460 1GB edition is your best choice but if you need to save the cash the regular 1 will do fine :)

Linux Ubuntu does have ATI drivers now, but since Windows drivers for ATI aren't too hot I'm always wary about them in Linux - but you never know - they might even be better. After ym last experience with ATI though I've went back to paying the xtra for the green for reliability and stability (although I know not all of you will agree with me there but no issues since doing so)

how much better is the 1gb version over the 768mb

Lots. Not only does it have the 1gb but it also has a wider memory bandwidth. As I said when they released dude the difference is apparently very stark. I would only use the 768 if I was SLI-ing them.

I haven't seen LOADS of data on it, but it seems to provide ~10% increase in frame rates occasionally a little more with a dash of AA added. That's at 1920 x 1080 in Crysis. In the Dirt 2 the difference was marginally more, ~12-13%. The 1GB version was also able to overclock a little further than the 768MB, though stock speeds were used for the above numbers.

well thats what i though playing at 1920*1080 i wouldent of thought you would see a difference,i am picking a 460 up tomoro but as scan dont have any instock (gainward 1gb) i was thinkin the asus 768mb

When I say 10% its we're talking literally like 4-5 fps depending on game or whether you add AA or not. A 768MB wouldn't be a bad buy per se, just if you were able to get the 1GB it might worth it just to have a little bit of a boost, but it only appears to have a slight one at that, which would only really be noticeable with higher settings where every little helps. Obviously if you were to SLi pairs of each in the future, the results may differ more.

The reason for the 768 being that slower is nVidias new scalable design. This means that when they reduce RAM, they also reduce ROP's and memory bandwidth. So the name is very misleading, it is practically a completely different card. I'd personally go for the 1GB any day, unless I was incredibly price-constrained.

just found this deal mate got one of them myself mucho cheapness

i got my gainward GS gtx 460 today, and i must say its awsome, its soo tiny, and i am idle at 30c lol thats cool and its a 40% fan speed ha ha.

also it allows for voltage tweaks :)

PNY worst warranty ever. Full of lies and full of holes. Infact, they interviewed BFG's top flight and they sat and ripped holes in the warranty.

Thanks a lot guys!

So after reading al lyour comments, apparently the gtx260 won. The problem now is where im going to buy in the US, but as im a international customer i cant buy in newegg nor directron....Just buy.com and thats not a cheap store. My budget is $250, will that be ok? I found a gtx460 1gb in buy.com but is a PNY, will that be ok?

But the huge question will there be a HUGE difference between the gtx460 and my 880gt?

Thanks!

And if you can live with the 768mb model this is a nice card. No different to the others of course, but looks nice and has a decent warranty (as long as you don't forget to go through the hoops to get it reggyed).

Avoid PNY. Honestly I'm not saying that for fun. Their warranty is a supposed lifetime warranty. However, what they actually mean is the lifetime of the card. So let's say you went and bought a 250 GTS,well, you would have no warranty because Nvidia do not make them any more. All of these things and more were all pointed out by the CEO of BFG. As soon as Nvidia stops making the card? You're SOL. So imagine how happy you would be had you got a PNY 465? Not.

BTW. Put your sensible hat on. Wait for the reply from ATI before you rush out and jump on a 460.

Obviously there is far more meaning to that than seeing if you can get a Radeon cheaper (you will, that's a foregone conclusion) but as I say, deeper meaning.

When ATI hit back (which they will) Nvidia are going to have to counter it (which they will).

A nice metaphor for you... If two of your friends had a deal for you would you immediately go with one, or would you let them fight it out and then take the offer that they had managed to beat out of each other?

Patience is a virtue man. I know the 460 is a bloody fantastic card, but the 5850 is better. And when (not if, when) it drops to $200 (which it will, it wasn't even originally RRPed for much more than that, ATI just got greedy when Nvidia didn't respond) then you will get a better card for your money.

I'd actually be willing to hazard a bet that within 6 months the 460 will be down to 5770 prices.
