Graphics card advice help? (urgent)

The only way to tell is test with both orientations. If dust becomes a problem and the performance difference is negligible switch back.

JR, do you think it'll make a huge difference though?... and obviously have the rear exhaust without dust filter then I assume, dumb question though. Only use the filter when as intake yes?...

I do not think it will make a profound difference. But i'm not going to spend days doing computational fluid dynamics and particle simulation to validate my claims when you could try it for real in a few minutes. It will be faster to just do it and find out rather than debate it for days is my general point here, i'm not going to undermine that too much by discussing it :p

And as intuition tells you there is no point adding a restriction (ie. filter) to the air leaving your case.

Please find out what it is first before spending more money!

Do you have on-board video? Can you just connect that and take the GPU out completely? But up some very old/ non-demanding games or run some benchies to put a little stress on the system and see if there's coil whine?

Right guys... so I've now done the testing as I've been ill for some time and haven't had the strength to do it.

But here are the results:

DVI -> Motherboard: Nothing
DVI -> Sapphire R9 290X: Screamed like a mouse on crack.
DVI -> Sapphire Radeon HD6950: Screamed like a mouse on crack.

So what do you guys recommend I do now?... the thing is, I never noticed it on my 6950 before, as it was just recently I discovered the phenomen "coil whine" and is now completely anal about it lol.

Right well...

Tbh, I think you're only annoyed by the coil whine now because you're actively trying to find it. Truth is, it's probably always been there if your 6950 has it too, it just didn't bother you cause you thought it was regular fan/cooler noise and after a bit you really do get used to it and don't even hear it anymore.

Maybe it IS regular fan noise? But you're just assuming it's coil whine cause you've read about it. Could you reproduce the issue and record a short video for us? Can upload it to any site (like YT) and then share it here so we can tell you what we think it sounds like.

EDIT;
Also, Shit, I can't remember what I was going to say but it was a really good idea! I'll get back to you about that!

EDIT 2;
I GOT IT! You can also try setting an FPS limit in games (v-sync) or I'm pretty sure you can set one in MSI Afternburner too. My GTX760 gets coil whine, but only when the FPS exceeds 300. So for instance in-game in GTA IV it is completely fine, but during the uncapped menu and loading screens, I get >9000FPS and that's when coil whine occurs.

Ya some games that net you extremely high framerates tend to make the gpu whine. Don't know why but i get that sometimes when i leave the Heaven or Valley benchmarks just as an example.

I do agree you should make a video and show it to us, only way we can determine if that is what the problem is.

Also have you tried any other cable connections? You've only used DVI. Try HDMI??

You mean, you want me to basically put on 3DMark and record the "coil whine" of the 290X inside my PC and upload it for you?...

I did actually do that in BF3, when Vsync was off, it was there... when I turned it on, it was there as well but quite quieter.

And that is true though, maybe I've just gotten to an*l about this whole coil whine thing? :/... still, it's still annoying to hear it now that I've gotten to know the issue! :p

I think that I didn't even know coil whine or anything before, as I didn't put that much pressure on it and never actually think anything like coil whine existed.
It was just when 3DMark launched, that it was the loudest whine I've ever heard. Like a whining bee that were about to explode lol.

***EDIT*** - NeverBackDown: I used to use DVI, but now I'm on DisplayPort for my main monitor and same thing.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying ;)

Do you think you can get the 970 (like you mentioned in the PM), put it in, set a cap in Afterburner similar to your monitor's refresh rate, and just enjoy the card without sticking your ear into the case? Obviously you might still hear it a little but yeah, you do get used to that probably :)

All the problems come when you start gaming in silence with an FPS counter in the corner. Suddenly everything runs like poop, it's laggy, your cards making horrible noises and your cooling isn't good enough.

That's how you know your no longer a gamer and you've become an enthusiast ;)

Don't think switching from a 290x to a 970 is a good idea. I mean the 970's are known to have coil whine issues and it is common. Wouldn't risk it. I think he is mistaking the coil whine for something else..

Ahh okay, well will do it tomorow then... maybe stupid to ask, but should I have the HX750i plugged in, AND also try plugging my Silver power 850 JUST into the GPU, to see if that changes things (if it works etc)?...

Set a cap, you mean like set a FPS limit to like 100fps, so the fps stays at that?...
Regarding the refresh rate, if mines at 144Hz, what would you then recommend?.

I don't stick my ear into the case :p, I hear the whine coming out the back I/Os, such as the PCI brackets etc.
But I might do that... it's just very hard to "ignore" the fact of whining once you've actually come to the knowledge of it and know it's a real issue. Rather than "a graphics card can't have anything like this", like I used to think about 3-4 years ago, when I first got this PC.

Hehe, I think that would suit me perfectly by now... I've more gone from the actual gaming experience, to undoubtely annoying myself on the slighest whining and if the temps are a bit "high", then I'm like "shiit "...

Never really thought myself of an "enthusiast" haha :P

I will try and record it tomorow then... remember, it won't be great, as it's just recorded with my iPhone 5S.
But I'll keep it in idle for a few seconds, then start up 3DMark and keep recording so you'll hear it.

Yeah, if your screen is 144Hz, set a 144 FPS limit in Afterburner. Anything above that you won't see anyway cause your screen can't keep up.

You have achieved enthusiast status by now ;)

Cool, will do this then :)

Haha, I must say and admit though... kinda hate that status, kinda wish to go back to the gamer status again

Well fun fact for those who have absolutely no interest in this what so ever... but it feels sooo good, when an employee at the retailer shop was once being a total asshole.

This is also a thank you to all of you who tried helping me, by legal actions and by legal support... Dice, Feronix etc.

And now when I had the law behind me and I shove the 3 receipts for the 3 different cards I had gotten replaced from them due to coil whine, so that I could cancel my purchase, right up his face... and the look on his face, that moment, that was so golden!.

God I love moments like that... he just said, "well they have confirmed the issue and we will replace it"... I said, "no, I want to cancel it, as I have gotten 3 cards from you, all defect and I now have the right to cancel it by law... I have recepit to prove it.... first (bam sound when I placed it down on the counter), second (bam) and third (bam). All right there!"... and his face, god if I only could have recorded it :D... so golden!.

Anyway, went to another retailer which have way better policy regarding returns etc, so just ordered an ASUS GTX 980 Strix :) ... I hope that this one will be better :)

Just an small update for ya all :p

Thanks again to my buds on here, Dicehunter, Feronix, JR, NeverBackDown etc! Really appreciate all the help you guys have given me and the continuos help you give me and to this community. You guys are truly gold worthy! :)

Coil whine is really hard to avoid when you're actively looking for it. You can get any card to coil whine in certain situations, mainly when there isn't an FPS cap. All the cards I've ever owned I can make whine. Even if they normally don't have an issue.

If you get whine with your strix, chances are you're just going to keep getting the same issue over and over.

Sorry to be a negative nancy, but I've followed your various coil whine issues and while you could expect the 970s to have very bad issues, your 290x is one of the better made.

For the record I can get coil whine in the same way you can. Good on you for getting that retailer to actually accept returns but I think your effort might be in vain.

No worries barnsley and I see your point and it's fair enough.

Well, I would make the argument that it's both ways... both in a gain way and in vain to be honest here. I see what you mean on that front and I agree, but on the other hand, it allowed me to get away from them and their shitty policy, in order to actually go to another retailer(s) which have been policys regarding this matter.

And yes, I can't reject the fact that I've gotten very anal about actively looking for coil whine, I guess I just have to settle with one that I find to be lowest one and face the fact that getting a card that has no whine at all, is impossible.

Yes, that is why I went away from the 970s and now going for the 980, since it is better made, has better cooling (more heatpipes), looks better in my opinion and is the newest, highest end card, and it's more efficient than the 290X.
But you are correct in the fact that the 290X is well made, it felt solid like a tank and it beefy like one too.

In all... I just wanted to get away from that retailer and their shit policy, basically what it says is that you actually NEED to put the entire box inside your PC and test the graphics card. You can't take it out of the box. That IS their policy and hence why I don't think it was all in vain, as these 2 other retailers I have an aim on, 2 for the 980 Strix and one of them for the 290X as well.
So I'm happy on that front :)
