GPU temperature question

I've have a XFX R9 280X for a while now and it was running into the high 70s (°C) under load. So i decided to change the thermal paste. This seemed to help with the load temps bringing the load temps down to the 62-64 (°C). However i have noticed that the card idles around 46°C which is higher than the 39ish°C it idled at before. Does this seem ok? why would the load temps drop and the idle temps rise???

The case is a Fractal Design Node 804 With two intakes and two exhaust fans. I used isopropyl alcohol to wipe off the old termal paste and replaced it with IC diamond thermal paste (dot method)

Thanks for any input.....

How much paste did you put on it? The gpu doesn't have a heatspreade so that means you would have to cover the entire die with paste (since it's IC diamond a bit more excess wouldn't hurt but might have actuallly helped)

A sizeable dot however i would have to remove it to again to see the coverage. how is best to spread it out? or do the EK thing and make a star :) ???

Get one of these and spread it out

Just a sucking egg comment for most if not all, so apologies.
The star method is an X & + together on the same die.
