GPU pricing - Then VS Now - How much has pricing changed?

So is using a GPU 24/7 really going to be that bad for it?

I ask as I game on my PC. That's it primary purpose. When I'm not gaming the machine is Folding@Home so it's running at full tilt 98% of the time.

Am I damaging the card as a result?

Only if temps are high.

They will run fine under a 24/7 load. Yes it won't last as long but still lasting years.
The first thing to go is the fan bearings. So you'd have to replace those

They are not designed to be ran 100% 24/7, no. Nothing is, apart from server gear. Why do you think most Xeons are capped to something lame like 2.2ghz? because it's the only way Intel can guarantee their longevity.

That is why I never used to fold. You are caning your leccy, smashing the balls out of your card and for what? science. Then when they find a cure for cancer they will market and sell it.

They will sell used, but tbh they are worth far less. Like I said before I have seen cards literally turn from nice clean silver solder contacts to pure white, where the flux was breaking down from all of the heat and current being pulled through the card.

Some people need to remember we went through all of this before. It wasn't anywhere near as long lasting as this, but, loads of people bought 290/x for mining on. When they came up for sale they were shagged, whining like a baby with no dummy and sold for about 1/3 of what a non mining card would.

It crashed before and it will crash again. Money is not limitless.

Very common. However, name one place you can buy them from? you can't, basically. So all you can do is bodge it.

EVGA's change in warranty policy very recently says it all as far as this topic tbh.

You contact the manufacturer. Not that difficult.

Unless it's EVGA... TBH? I reckon most of the other GPU manus will follow suit soon. Especially once the cards get to around 2 years old and start failing, in their droves.

It was the 200 series that killed BFG and the switch to ROHS solder.

Well the card is under water so the fans aren't being used.

Oh and temps? Currently sitting at 38C under full load :)

Heat is the major killer, yes. However, when you are fully loading up the mosfets, VRMs whatever you want to call them 24/7 then eventually you will have problems. As I said, they are just not designed to be ran like that (who games at full pelt 24 hours a day?).

Most of the X58 board failures I saw were the fets and VRMs etc. Overclocking 1.4ghz takes its toll eventually.

Just to add. When I say games I mean just that. These are gaming cards. Meaning they are not assembled with the care and quality of materials of a workstation grade product. So the fans, for example, have crappy bearings and so on. Simply as they just predict that maybe you will use it for 4-5 hours a day, not 24 at full pelt.

Edit again. I am not referring to fans like the Delta blower, as those are usually pretty indestructible. I have, though, had fans fail on a 480 Lightning and they were irreplaceable.

It's sad to see retailers trying to rinse gamers by inflating the price of GPUs because they can't keep up with demand:

The quicker new ASICs come out forcing forks, the better it'll be for gamers, but anyone whose invested in GPU mining will be in for a shock.

Yup. The whole "I'm gonna by a console because of RAM/GPU prices" is saddening to see!

Make me wonder how the new card prices will go considering they normally sell quicker than the manufacturers can make them.
