GPU fans don't spin under load

Hey guys,

First of all, sorry for making so many threads lately

Anyway. I've noticed some rather weird behaviour from my new GPU. It seems that whenever I reboot my PC, the GPU fans just stop working. Even when I put it under heavy load, the fans don't spin up. The first time I noticed this I was running Time Spy, and the GPU temps went up to 85' Celcius. Even then, the fans wouldn't spin up. This has happened every single time I've tried to recreate it. The only way I've been able to fix this is by changing the OC profile in GPU Tweak 2. As soon as I do this, the fans work normally, until I reboot my PC.

Here's a screenshot from Radeon Wattman as an illustration.

As you can see, the GPU fans didn't kick in at all, even under load and at 71' Celcius. Only when I changed the OC profile did the fans start spinning (which is also visible in the screencap). Any thoughts? Other than this, the GPU has been working fine. I did also notice a weird rattling noise under load. I'm assuming that it's coil whine, as it also does this when the fans don't spin, but it does sound very weird. Not high-pitched at all, just a low rattling/buzzing-sound. Luckily it isn't very loud so when I wear headphones it isn't audible.

Cheers!

From what I gather with the Strix the fans remain idle until the GPU reaches 60c, have you tried reinstalling your drivers to see if that fixes it. I'm seeing many people having the same issue on reddit and it appears to be driver related or conflicting OC programs.

Reinstalling the drivers didn't work either, sadly (just tried it). I did have both MSI Afterburner and GPU Tweak installed at one point, but Afterburner didn't work at all for me (every setting was locked somehow), so I uninstalled it. I've tried reinstalling GPU Tweak too. I did also try taking out the GPU and putting it back in, but that didn't do much either :/

I'll put my money on GPU tweak causing the issues. I've had nothing but trouble from that crap software on Asus cards and any other branded card either. Even caused my games to be unstable at stock speeds. Removed it and installed MSI AB all problems went away.
You might just have conflicting settings. Both Tweak and the driver are trying to control the same thing so creates this issue maybe?

Do you have a 2nd bios on the card? Try switching it?

Just tried removing GPU Tweak and installing MSI AB. First time I installed AB I couldn't change any settings, but somehow that fixed itself. Set the fan speeds to auto in AB, and sure enough, it works normally now, so it was deffo just a software issue.

Honestly the ASUS software has been a mixed bag so far in general. I keep setting my motherboard LEDs to turn off when the PC is turned off, but Aura keeps resetting itself.
That doesn't really bother me (I turn off the power strip when I'm away/asleep anyway), but their software really is quite buggy.

Thanks for the help guys :)

Good to hear.
But yeah Asus software is crap.. people say the BIOS is always the best.. I don't want to find out. Anything Asus I've used has been meh

Amazingly its the Asus software I use as a go-to now. Maybe Ive just got used to it

Other than it setting itself back to opening at the start every time I change the driver (so I disable it again every time) I actually kinda like it. I even use it on my main rig to pretty much disable the GPU fans - where I dont game on it my GPU has a whisper of airflow over the gpu and on the desktop mine sits at 70c :p
