GOG's Galaxy client is now in open beta, and it packs some interesting and unique features. Most importantly, it's DRM-free. Do we have a potential Steam-killer here?

I've never given a thought of things like these, but ever since I joined OC3D and you guys started getting into these News thingys, I've really gotten up to phase with stuff in the gaming and tech world. Awesome work guys and much appreciated! :)

For this article, I must say that the text was very nice on the eyes, sound very interesting and appealing I must admit. IF it truly does deliver these features as mentioned, then I might even join in on it in the future :)

Just raises the question... how come it was started earlier?, I mean, yes, Steam exists, but as far as I'm aware it doesn't have all of these features at this kind of extent. Or does it?...

Galaxy does indeed have quite a few features Steam doesn't have, but I think that has to do with GOG's origins. GOG has always been focused on selling DRM-free games for an honest price, whereas Steam pretty much runs on DRM. The DRM-free backup wouldn't work for Steam. Same with the 'rollback' feature. There's no way you can downgrade your games on a gaming platform with DRM.

I signed up! had to to get my free Witcher 3, but also a host of other free games that I doubt I would ever play, prices of games seem good.

Don't know if it'll ever get like steam. Steam users have tons of games.. can't just simply leave. I'd rather not have more than 2 clients, then add on Origin, Uplay, and the R* client some have.. It's just to much. Now if i could show proof of purchase to GOG on my steam games and then get those free on GOG. I'd do it. But they won't.. unless they wanted to attract as many people as possible and hope they stay and buy games in the future from them.

Also, it's all well and good garanteeing games on your delivery platform will never need a connection / will always work offline. But.. that will make the library of games pretty small, since, the 'always on' culture of games and DRM is kind of the done thing and won't be changing anytime soon.
 
I will give it a go, but I don't see it affecting Steam in the short term.

Not many people will be willing to download yet another client, no matter how good it appears to be.
 
It will be a while before GOG will be able to at least get close to Steam's popularity. If It doesn't fail, which I hope not. Good to see something with those features that does everything steam does and more.

Maybe 10 years too late though. :/
