The recent flooding in Thailand has forced some hard disk drive makers to suspend operations in the country.

“Approximately half of the world’s hard disk drives are produced in Thailand. In the last two weeks, we’ve seen both Western Digital and Toshiba suspend production, due to flooding in factories."

Hard drive prices are expected to raise considerably in the next few weeks.

Ebuyer prices for WD hard drives have doubled+ already, lucky you posted this! I planned on buying two WD HDD's around christmas but, in lieu of this, I've bought the HDD's now at the price they were originally (also lucky, not all sellers have freaked out yet...only most of them) and i'll just have to sit on them for 2-3 months hoping they're not broken or expensive metal bricks

I hope Thailand recovers quickly!

uh oh..

The seller I got my Drives from (proxied by Amazon) no longer lists the drives I bought as things they sell. I can't tell if they're just withdrawing the fact they sell WD Blacks for cheap so they can hike the price like everyone else, or if they're going to turn around and go "Western Digital Caviar blacks? Never heard of them. You never bought them from us...no sir..."

Yes, the factories are shut down. We're limiting the amount of hard drives that can be sold to each customer currently.

Market forces creating the prices for the hardware that's already been paid for ... (the harddrives in the stores are already paid for at the old price, the ones they may re-order may be higher, cept there aren't meant to be any available)

.. if people had the balls, they'd boycott any store that hyper inflated the prices.

Nice to see stores exploiting opportunities and their customers. It's not like they're eol, never to be seen again, they're just taking advantage of possibly a months worth of extra profit.

Let's hope that, unlike fuel prices that go up with market forces immediately (even tho the fuel is already in the pumps) and only fall again at a snail's pace (if they ever do), they come back down to the prices they were at before.

Fortunately I have harddrives all over the place at this point in time, but that's besides the point.

EDIT: FYI, as I work around 1000s of harddrives, the ones on my desk at the moment:

Seagate - made in China

Hitachi - made in Thailand

Samsung - made in Korea

Western Digital - made in Malaysia

.. but I've always been of the opinion they all get made in the same grass hut for the price of a bowl of rice, and rebadged externally.

in belgium, most stores no longer sell hdd's and those who do have doubled prices, ssd's are getting cheaper than hdd in a few days I guess

Trouble is that these shortages will go onto the middle of next year.

Thailand suppliers have to wait for the floods to end before they can even start to assess the damage.

Thailand has to rebuild the "clean" areas and China and Malaya will be unable to cover demand.

Think of companies like Dell and Apple, they will be buying tons of stock.

Prices will just keep going up and up.

Then they will take a while to drop down too.

Bought a Samsung 2tb f4 [£47] a few weeks ago. Ordered a 2tb WD [green] on Amazon, this week, and after a phone call saying they were out they replaced it with my Chinese Seagate[£70].

Was going to buy a samsung spinpoint f3 1tb due to its value/performance but its pretty much doubled =s (im never going to afford my rig now LOL)

HOLY .... a 160gb caviar blue HDD in ebuyer for £60....i just hope people don't buy into this con...

...and RAM, and Top Shop's stock and political propaganda which may well be sourced from preschoolers playing scrabble on an ouiji board in a fishtank in the shape of the Apple logo... and the Shlurm factory...

Can't help but love some of the stuff you come out with some times XD
