Gigabyte GTX980Ti G1 Gaming Review

I've had this card a little while and it's a solid performer. Good clocks and a quality cooler. Absolutely no complaints.

I bought the ek waterblock recently and I'm looking forward to seeing what it does under water.

Results?

Why is it, that the 'Vanilla' / Reference 980TI's can end up number 2 and number 3 in the lists for the 4K test and the Watchdogs test?

How can it beat the 'extreme cards' ?

Silicone lottery.

Thanks.

TBH I did not know the difference by winning the lottery could outperform the gains from £100 extra spend on a 'top' card

Would be interesting to see ~20 identical cards being tested to fully understand how much of a difference it can make.

Still a 980 Ti core in the middle, the top cards add longevity and better overclocking for poorer binned / silicone lottery GPU's. The higher end cards do have muych better components and cooling. Doesnt always mean its going to be the best overclocking card on the planet.

That is a pretty good argument for simply getting the cheapest card out there, as the gains can be close to zero by going all-in. Or lets just say, you are likely to get a faster card by spending €100+ extra, but you cannot be sure.

As for cooling and longevity - well, the reference cooler will keep the cards 'cool enough' for them to do their business. And who buys a 980ti and plan to keep it for 4-5 years? I'm guess none, as that kind of people upgrade often. Finally the blower fan will keep the rest of the PC cooler compared to WindForce and the like.

Guess it not *that* simple to define what is best.
