Gigabyte Announces AM3 Motherboard Added Support for DDR3

What the hells going on...the official AMD Dragon Press Release at the begining of december said that the AM3 socket is expected late Q2 early Q3...February...jeez has someone put a rocket up there ass or what...

Get - one - in - test - it !

I have a feeling the earlier than expected news on these might be cos things went well ?

must of rast...its a massive shift...still based on the 790 chipset though..which makes me wonder if the initial chipset is just ramped up to allow DDR3...its interesting though..with the DDR2 varients of Phenom II doing well in most tests its gonna give intel pause for thought...as looking at the figures ive seen running round the net the Phenom II DDR3 flavour could surpass I7....this years going to be very interesting...I'm thinking the Dragon platform maybe the spider platform we were all hoping for.....this is gonna be a bareknuckle fight ..... ding ding round 1

These figures didn't come from Fudzilla did they?

Even with DDR3 PII isn't gonna come close to i7 in CPU heavy benchmarks (in games it'll still be as competitive as DDR2-based PII systems are).... What it will most likely do is allow PII close to gap even more to Intel's higher end 45nm Core 2 Quads (Q9550, Q9650), which is all AMD needs really.

i7 is still aimed at a completely different market (a rich market in todays economical climate) so AMD is much better off gunning to fight people looking at X38/X48/P45 systems.

Aaaaaaaaanywho, that Gigabyte board is a absolutely lovely looking piece of kit, about as close to a perfect layout i've seen in the last few months. Hopefully we'll see more motherboard manufactures catering for the high end market again (something thats been lacking for AMD owners since the original Phenom). Asus RoG and Foxconn Quantum Force boards next please. :D

there have been many benchmark tests in game that has shown on certain games PII DDR2 actually rate above I7...not in many games but in OC terms a PII oc'd to 3.66 against an I7 at 3.8 has pushed up some interesting benchmarks...check toms recent article out....your right though that I7 is above them in most...but with the PII DDR2 not being that far behind and at a pricepoint that is no where near in the league of whats required on I7 i think most people will live with the 7% or so performnce decrease...at the end of the day the architecture of AMD's quad core IN THEORY is actually better concieved then Intels...maybe this is the point where they can actually prove that..trust me as someone who studied VLSI its getting interesting as with entry level PII being very competetive on price/preformance ratio.. maybe not on the 790 chipset as my fear is that its an adopted DDR2 architecture rather then being a purebred DDR 3 architecture like the x58 will result in the I7 still being ahead...anyway the whole point is that this is all speculation...lets see what the AM3 throws up..as I have this gut feeling that AM3 maybe the revolution 939 was..and AM2+ was not..at the end of the day intels premium for performance has been justified over the past few years...and the gap has grown so small in the last few weeks that you can **** over it...2 years ago it was like the grand canyon...its all speculation...but like ras said they wouldnt rush it out unless preliminary tests have proved extremelley promising..we can argue opinion all day...lets wait till the cold hard figures come out...ive gotta feeling as with most of AMD's endeavours..were gonna be really happy ..or extremelly disapointed...

You know you've been into PC modding too long when your brain goes "of course a Pentium II wont be near a i7, what a strange thing to say" :D.
