getting a new GPU

I'm going to get a new gpu. I have have been looking at a gtx 760 4GB card. I'm looking at 4GB cards for the head room with vram seeing console ports are staring to use so much vram.

I'm playing on a 1080p 60Hz tv and I'm happy to play games at medium when I have to and I play on high most of the time to keep temps down.

so this is the part I need the help of all you fine boys and girls, I cant decide on which card to go for. As stated earlier I'm looking at 760's. the two 760's I've been looking at are:
ASUS ROG Striker 4096MB £221.99
and
MSI Gaming OC 4GB £208.85

(some of you may have noticed black and red ;))

I like nvida over amd but am willing to switch over to them if there is a more powerful 4/6GB card that is cool and and willing to go up to the same value of the 760's lets say £230.

any help would be grateful.

Iirc someone earlier today posted a very cheap 280x for 230 pounds. Its only 3GB but it won't make much a difference. The system ram is used more than the vram. Both are important but 3GB will do fine. You could always go up to a 290 with the 4GB vram with it. Same price as a 770 but much faster.

I'm only naming amd for you because you want vram.. which they tend to usually have more than their closest nvidia competitors. Also you can have a lot of vram but if the core isn't actually fast enough to run those settings that soak up that vram then its not really worth getting.

A black and red 290 4GB for under £250 ?? I cant find one.

the msi 280x sounds better to me but its still the vram. I know 3GB is plenty for the minute but I still wont the head room of 4GB.

I'm going to be keeping this gpu for a few years. I'm going to put hacked bios on it and OC it. The raw power ant the thing I wont, I want a card that will play games at a good fps on a 1080p tv at medium and high setting in 4/5 years like my 560ti is doing now.

VRAM isn't everything, especially as you don't max your games out. A 280x will last longer than a 760 as well (more grunt etc). Watchdogs is just terribly optimized and is the first of the new gen of games, meaning its no where near polished.

4gb VRAM vs 3gb VRAM is utterly pointless, both are perfectly fine at 1080p for next fair few years, heck 3gb is still fine for 1440p, even with AA cranked.

And tbh what you're basically looking at is a 760 vs a 7970, where the 7970 is cheaper... quite the walkover TBH, the 760 isn't even all that much of an upgrade over your 560ti, definately not £230 pound's worth of upgrade by any stretch. Get the 280x, it's by far the better card mate :)

Since when is the 770 priced the same as a 290. A 290 is much more expensive on Amazon.

In the US the 770 has been the same price as a 290 since launch but not counting the bitcoin mine markups resellers would use and just recently the 770's prices dropped. Though for just a tad more money you could still get a 290.

Thanks for all the in put.
I'n the end I went for a msi gtx 770 gaming 4gb.

I wanted some thing that ran a bit cooler then the 280x and 290 and I still get the 4GB vram that i wanted.

Wow, in the UK, the 290 is a good 100 pounds more expensive!

It will end up cooler as I don't mine noise as I only use my pc with headphones on so I'll be setting the fan profile speed up a bit to keep it cooler.

I'd rather the gpu to stay under 60c then quiet.

Then a kraken/watercooler. Gpus are designed to get around 70c. If you want those temps you'll either have to get a ichill gpu or watercool it.
