looking for a gaming monitor, no size restrictions really. Want it for games, internet, movies. Dell 24inch? Anything better in the price range?

Good choice and not really!!

LOL - there are some good monitors around the dell is the best choice for 1600x1200 gaming although some HDTV TV's offer 1280x1024 resolutions with DVI input and other impressive stats.

The viewsonic 4ms 19" is also a good choice.

Cheers

so would an hdtv tv be a better option at the price point?

You get more features for your money and if 1600x1200 gaming is not your thing - the HDTV has 16ms (or lower response) time, DVI input and a resolution of 1280x1024 then it would be my weapon of choice.

For gaming i still personally prefer my CRT (im a NOT trying to turn this into a CRT vrs TFT thread, this is just how i feel), i love my 22" Mitsubishi, colours are great, loads of different resolutions for whatever you are doing, just dont intend to move it a lot lol. My mates 22" Iiyama is sweet as well (but mine is black :))

I concur - the 22" CRT is the best gaming monitor out there. 1600x1200 @ 85hz cant be beaten. I have to admit though I went through 3 Mitsubishi's in a row, all of them were faulty in some shape or form.

Ive owned my 19" Mitsi for 18 months, perfect it is.

Get a CRT for serious gaming, a LCD just isn't good enough yet.

I have to agree and disagree - CRT's are the best gaming monitors - but the sheer size and weight of a 22" CRT screen is huge - a 20" LCD monitor is lighter, uses less power and has a smaller footprint (using less desk space) and if you get a HDTV unit comes with TV too.

There is no issue gaming on LCD and hasn't been for a while (since 16ms screens came out).

i made the swap from crt to tft and i have to say i'd always choose the lcd, far cry is the best example of this i just found colours to be alot more vivd, and if your gonna spend that sort of money get the dell, i poalyed ut 2004 on my friend hp 23" it was amazing, gaming is seriously amazing on that type of monitor.

Well if space is a concern you don't get a 22CRT, thats pretty obvious. Why should space be a concern? get a bigger desk. What exactly are you goin g to use the desk space for? is it really that precious? i love it when people say a LCD uses less power, so what good is this, when you spend about 3000quid on PC parts in a year, don't forget though children, you will save 50qud on electricity in a year.

It would take about 4 years for you to get your money back from the power you save, compared to the cost of the LCD to a CRT.

LCD's are crap and doing dark colours compared to a quality CRT. D3 and FEAR, look much better on a CRT

gaming= CRT's are best.

Don't say such things about my lovely monitor, you'll hurt her feelings :(

I actually prefer LCD, it has far superior pixels to my CRT. In 3DCAD and PS, it's much easier to line pixels up with pixels on the screen. So crisp aswell. Hmmm, I wouldn't call them crap, a bit harsh! :)

how ever good crts are at gaming they lose on looks. After i spend all this money making my rig look pretty, the crt just lets it down. I also need the space on my desk for books etc Im also very messy so its nice to spread the mess so it doesnt look as bad. Im thinking of getting a 24inch dell, its 580 quid, big, nice. Anyone have anything bad to say about these?

LOL, I know exacly what you mean ;)

Those 24" monitors look an odd shape to me, surely it stretches the screen in an odd looking way? Good for movies I guess, but I wonder how it would effect my CAD programs...

Did I not mention that I hae the 24" WS Dell and it's the puppies privates - although the backlight takes a while to warm the screen up (10mins) the end result is fantastic.

I like the look of my CRT just because everyone who sees it is like "OMG that's huge" :D

Those Dells are pretty sweet i have to say, my mate has one and i think one like that will be my new monitor after this 22" CRT (by which time hopefully LCDs will be cheaper and even better than they are now). I still think the dark colours look best on a CRT, i prefer Doom3 on my CRT than on the Dell, but it is only marginal, get involved in the game and you'll stop looking so hard at the colours :)
