Games of the Decade Thread

Excellent idea for a thread. My nominations:

Batman Arkham City.
I consider this to virtually be a perfect game. The story is superb, the atmosphere is so dynamic and realistic you almost feel like you're there. The voice acting is among the best ever in a video game and each character is done so well. This is the quintessential version of Batman and all his characters. The combat, controls and action are also excellent and become 2nd nature really quick with a pretty easy learning curve that never takes away from the action. I honestly can't come up with anything negative to say about AC, it literally checks all the boxes especially if you're a Batman fanatic like me.

Mass Effect 3....yes 3! I know I know, the ending. Yes it was a dud but Bioware put out an extended ending DLC and it was good enough. Even with the original dud ending the game is still my favorite game ever. For one, atmosphere, I'm really big on that. All the levels especially in the beginning and most especially the Turian moon were incredible. I spend most of that level wandering around looking at the scenery from the Reapers in the background to the view of Pallevan on fire, just awesome! The story is the best in sci-fi IMO and all the side quests are so cool most of all curing the genophage and the Reaper/Maw fight is the greatest cut scene in video game history! Speaking of the ending, the "control" ending is so good, gut wrenching and emotional. The music is perfect, sad and heartfelt and when Shepard grabs the handles and is knocked back to one knee and struggles to stand back up all with the flashbacks of other characters as you watch a character you've spent 90+ hours with fade away... Well if that doesn't hit you right in the feels then you have no soul.

Borderlands 2. Maybe my favorite shooter. The combat is flawless, the weapons are super fun, really cool atmosphere and Handsome Jack steals the show. There's plenty of the game too. Do all the side quests and you easily get around 25 hours in one single player campaign. Just an excellent game on every level and one that none of the other Borderlands games have been able to recapture.

Dead Space 2. The Dead Space games are on my Mount Rushmore of games along with the Batman Arkham and Mass Effect games. The 1st game couldn't have been any better so 2 kind of went a different direction but still nailed it. It's still creepy and scary and it still has the most satisfying gun to shoot in all of video game history but it's more open and there's more of a story and it is avery cool story. The characters are cool, well written and well acted. The combat is a little smoother than the first game and it's got a few tweaks I prefer like the recharging stasis energy.

Honorable mentions would be:

Crysis 2. The most breathtaking graphics I'd seen since the 1st game. Just blew me away. Combat was a lot more fun where stealth and armor actually lasted long enough to use.

Max Payne 3.
Needs to be a movie. Combat and control were great but it's the story characters and acting that set this game apart. I replay it once a year usually on easy just for the story.

I guess I'm in the minority as mainly a multiplayer gamer :D

#1 has to be Counter-Strike: Global Offensive for me, changed the way I play and think of games, and strengthened and formed many friendships. It's so rewarding and perfectly paced.

Overwatch is also an excellent multiplayer game, where you really have to play as a team to succeed. But I haven't played it in quite a while as there's always an irritating hero in the meta. :P

Then as the only singleplayer game, Rimworld generates amazing stories just organically. Your base practically never ends up the way you originally planned.

Nah. BL2 is co op as is Dead Island.

I don't usually count games that rely on other people to make them great though. My friends are awesome, I know, I chose them.

BL2 and Dead Island are great as single player though. BL2 not so much as without co op and the added personality of friends it's not the same.

Many good games in the last 10 years. But these are the ones that i consider timeless classics like Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Half-Life. Games that are so good that they can't be compared or gradated.

World of Warcraft Legion, and Battle for Azeroth.
- Even if you don't like playing multiplayer going through these expansions solo is pure joy. So many different stories to be told. And the sheer amount of content. Although sometimes repetitive it is beautiful.

Witcher 3
- Does it really need an explanation?

Skyrim
- Just a raw RPG experience. Proper old school RPG. The music, atmosphere, and the modding content. Every game should be like this.

Mass Effect 2 & 3
- Yes the end is pathetic but the story and the gameplay are a benchmark. There are a very few games with story this deep.

Star Craft 2 trilogy.
- For me the Star Craft series has been and is the definition of RTS.

Portal 2
- Brilliantly unique. Too bad we don't get more games from Valve. There are some really talented people there.

Having recently finished GOW4 on PlayStation... Just. WOW. What an amazing game. Loved every second of it! Definitely add this onto my list. During the last mission I kinda foresaw what was about to transpire and I was so stoked and so ready for the next GOW. Going to be phenomenal.

If you got a PlayStation and like single player games then this is definitely one you have to try. If you have a PS4 pro and play at 4k, I suggest you choose the performance option. There's virtually no difference in graphics quality but the performance option allows you to get 30-50ish fps instead of a locked 30(with a dip every now and then). Can't tell the difference but you certainly can notice the gameplay smoothness. Instantly combat is WAAAAAY better.

I did everything in GoW minus the Valkyrie queen Sigrun, Simply couldn't get passed her, Got her down to 1mm health at most and then she got me.

I defeated her probably on my 9th or 10th try. In probably 4 situations I got her down to 1 hit away and I got careless and tried to attack when that was the worst choice possible.

Defeated her and then completed the last mission. Platinum Trophy. Worth every second!

I'm hoping with the PS5 they go back and patch older games, If it really does have backwards compatibility with PS4 games, So we could run GoW at true 4K60 instead of 4K30 or 1080P30.

It would be running on an emulator most likely.

God of War on the PS4 Pro runs at 1080p50-60 or 4k30. Watch some videos on it for proof. The visual difference is essentially 0, but mah gawd that performance uplift! Combat is soooooooooooooooooooooo much better.
