game freezing

hey all

The annoying game freezes have appeared again.

I have just moved so it is not plugged up to the net yet.

I can play for about 10 mins then i get a freeze. It would seem like it was GFX errors since the picture breaks up and some surfaces change colour, aka the classic i've OC'd my card and my ram is not happy.

I have not got any of my rig overclocked, the MB is a pig to get stable and with sli GTX 280 there is no real need in the GFX dept.

If i hit Cntl+Alt+Dlt it instantly unfreezes the games and off i go. Generally speaking without any more issues. When i strike the key combo it does not bring up the task manager as i would have expected, so i could close the unresponsive program.

Any ideas what might be causing the issue?

I have not got the latest Nvidia drivers on but with it not been connected to the net nothing has been updated to cause a conflict.

Any help is appreciated

Well...

It could be overheating. Have your video cards experienced any shock treatment during the move? Since you haven't overclocked them, then memory shouldn't be an issue, but it does happen, and the artifacts are pointing towards a video memory issue. New OCCT versions can test the video memory, but not while in SLI (it will give errors in sli!!!).

It could also be one of those "defective" chips we hear around the web all the time (the nvidia chip packaging problem). In this case, check the video cards individually, non-SLI, then RMA the culprit(s).

It could be a PSU related thing. Is your PSU stable (any blue smoke :) )?

It could be the motherboard, but that's rare. Can you check the capacitors on your motherboard and see if any of them are inflated or leaking?

Ctrl+Alt+Del works differently depending on what OS you're using. With new OS's you need to click a button after the key combo related screen appears.
