Game freezing & nVidia beta driver download 169.28 for Vista 64 bit - solved ?

Ok it`s a beta driver, and I don`t usually entertain them.

Busting around on cod4 tonite and it got to a stage when I was getting:

1. Freeze in game

2. Monitor acts like it goes into powersaving

3. cpu meter on G15 shows 1 core going crazy @ 100% (game uses about 30% at all times)

4. 10s pause or so

5. Game carries on as normal

.. every 10 minutes or so. Had this ever since having the 8800GT, and it happens for other people under different guises.

I thought, sod this, some1 must`ve found out something. Head on over to the UT forums and some guy is doing some classic investigating, trying all the obvious things, and the not so obvious and keeping the community up to date. His last entry said he installed these beta drivers - problem gone.

So I installed them tonite.... and played for hours with no symptoms.

Obviously I`ve been chasing this issue for some time. It`s not just 8800GT people who get the 1-4 above, and it`s not just Vista or 64bit people (the guy had Vista 32 in actual fact, still 169.28 beta).

Driver problem all along ? and it`s taken from the 8800GT`s release til this beta to sort it out ? That`s pretty darn shoddy.

Anywho, if u get 1-4 above when playing 3d games and have tried everything with no joy, check out the beta drivers.

I have being having some of the same problems for a while now and thought that it was down to my card being colcked too far,so have gone back to stock clocks and it still happens.

Will have to the the new beta drivers a try and see if that cures it,thanks a lot rast

I`ve I can recall the guyz thread, I`ll post the link. He basically went through stages of trying different hardware/software related solutions til he got to 14 - which is this.

I tried the non clocking, even underclocking. Seems immediately ok, then it`s back.

Massive response is Heat - but peoples with really cool temps, 45 idle 55 load (probably wc) and higher 50/75 people get it.

People with different 8800 cards like the GTX may be using the GT drivers or summit. 169.25 was the last one I had in b4 this beta one. Was working good last night, we`ll see how the weekend goes ;)

Ah kewl.

I got http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us from nVidia showing it as a beta too.

Swear I looked yesterday and it was recommended for 9xxxx cards, not 8800.

Meh, try em imo ;) Just don`t use the driver with the nVidia recomendation icon next to it, cos it sux. I`m hesitant over using the 174.xx tbh, cos it`s biased to the cards it specifically outlines, and "supports" the others.

well i have just installed the 174.74 beta driver,so lets see what happens over the next few days
