Gabe Newell believes that modders need to be paid

Valve needs to up the percentage 50/50 or 55% to Valve & 45 to the modder but i still can't see it catching on cause all of the "Free mod websites".

Some mods like Morrowind or Oblivion for Skyrim which are years in the making and massive I would happily pay for depending on the finished product, But not every mod deserves money.

Allowing modders to have a donation button rather than a purchase button within the Steam workshop that a majority of the proceeds go to the modder and a small % to Valve who host the files would be a much better idea as I can see these paid mods putting a lot of people off and slowly veering away from the epic scene that is modding.

This way Valve still get a nice chunk of change for simply hosting the files.

I don't think the bigger mods could be used in Steam cause the mods like Enderal and such use their own installer to me it seems like most mod makers are just happy to put them on The Nexus.

Also i think about 95% of mods use a Mod Manager.

Maybe Gabe wasn't even really talking about Skyrim mods this time.

Modders can be paid if the modders are also held responsible for their content, until then i think a donation system is fair.

Yeah a donation system should be the only option at this time and probably forever. I doubt the legal issues with mods will ever go away.

The Title should read " Gabe Newell believes Valve should make money from Modders".

They'd probably be better off going with a paypal account or patreon, to get a bigger amount of the money.

How do they work if 2 very similar mods are on steam 1 free and 1 paid for, or refunds for mods that don't get updated or a minimum amount of years the mod must be kept up to date

Donation system is the only way i support paying modders for their work, handing over money to valve in whatever percentage is dumb, valve have proven to be greedy as they can be with their first attempt to monetize mods and it blew up in their face, and now they want back in again in some other capacity to fill up their wallet even more, they swim in money but its never enough.

I have so many issues with valve and their practices and yet everyone keeps going lord gaben blah blah.

I have zero faith that Bethesda or Valve could implement paid mods without it being a disaster. To do it right would require huge amounts of (paid) work and there's no way they're going to spend that money since they clearly view paid mods as free income for themselves.

Stick to selling digital hats and trading cards.

This is the problem, the same issue as early access (the blight of the gaming world IMO). Modders could cash in then not bother updating their mod when devs push out updates. Or worse the updates may make changes that stops the mod from working at all or the devs add the same content as the mod for free! God paid mods are a minefield.

If their is anyone listening at valve or any other game studio, please make sure IF you let this happen don't let people get ripped off (like we have been with early access many times).

Didn't work the first time, won't work the second time. Valve makes enough bloody money. Guess they've been stung so hard by the crack down on gambling (thankfully) that they want to look at this as a revenue stream AGAIN...

I'm glad there are more people that think this, i had this on my mind since reading the article.
