G3258 Pentium K Anniversary

Hi all,
I've been looking at investing in a Pentium K G3258. The main purpose of this is to have a go at overclocking as I have very limited experience and would like to experiment more. From the review that Tom did it seems like a great little overclocker and at £50 it's a steal.

Ok my main question is can anyone recommend motherboard with good overclocking features to pair up with this CPU, I would like to go down the mATX route as when I'm not playing with the clocks it will be in my living room used for basic tasks web browsing the occasional game etc.

Tbh I should have mentioned a budget but haven't really thought about one (School Boy Error). The more I look around the more I'm fancying an ATX board especially the Asus H97 and Z97.

Suppose it's an excuse to buy the Corsair 780T I've got my eye on

Why not the Z97 Gamer pro because with H97 youll be limited to 1600mhz memory MAX - even if you buy 2400 you wont be able to set it higher than 1600

The Z97 is on the top of my list Tom. I found another thread where a similar question to mine was asked and you advised the same. Tbh it's a no brainer really as there is only a couple of £'s difference between the H97 and Z97 Asus Pro Gamer boards.

Tom, At the end of the G3258 review you mentioned you will be creating an overclocking guide. I understand that you are a very busy man but I was just wondering if you got round to doing it as it would be extremely helpful.

Indeed I have, but TTL is right (always) if I was building now I'd go with the Z97 as is handles memory much better than the H97, getting memory to 1600Mhz is a task in its self with the H97.

EDIT: As for OC'ing the G3258 it's easy peezy.. Just bump the Multiplier and voltages, there isn't really much more to it.

No problem, I have a thread below my signature for general Overclocking of the Pentium K and also a leader board there are a fair few of us who have experience with this chip, my first bit of advice would be to find a comfortable stock voltage, by lowering the voltage at stock frequency and finding a stable base, then slowly and incrementally raise the multiplier and then run some benches, if it becomes unstable then increase the voltage in 0.025v steps until it's 100% stable. I've seen these chips quite happily run 24/7 at 4.8Ghz & 1.30v, I get 4.6Ghz @ 1.25v but have yet to really push it.

Awesome, Thanks for the advice. When I start putting something together I will let you know. Yeah I had a look at your leaderboard, it will be interesting to see how far I can push it.
