FX-60 its coming.

Why oh why are these companys taking the TOASTY option, when we clearly have the technology to run much cooler. Why not base the design on that of the mobile cores, the Dothan only has a thermal guideline of 27Watts, yet the power consumption of these is going to be near 10 times that! Will you get 10 times the performance...

...Maybe 10 times the cost

I've been geeking it out, and have found some stuff...

There will soon be a Yonah, Sossaman, and Merom processor released by Intel. Why hasn't anybody mentioned this?! The Yonah is the lowest, but even this has dual core, and Vanderpool visualisation technology... These appear to be the successor to the Dothan/Sonoma chips... They will most likely release a desktop board for these fellas based upon the Sossaman for Blade servers, to be named Xeon LV and ULV. Sounds like I may stick with this CT-479 until these are released :D

Anyone know what else is coming on the AMD front?

Also I don't use CPUmark but isn't that a pretty poor score. Some 57s can get to 500 (ok at silly temperatures) but I wouldn't expect to gain around 60% more performance from cascades. Roughly 1Ghz overclock on a roughly 3Ghz chip should be around 30% max performance increase surely. I don't know - what do stock 57s get?

I'm not counting the pins but I'm guessing that's still 939. I hear M2 is delayed a while.

For sure M2 is delayed, or pushed back depending who you talk to, not a bad thing as 939 is not fully matured yet (crossfire has only just been released on 939 for crying out loud).

FX60 and X2 5000 will be the next (possibly last?) speed releases for 939 chipset though and Q1 2006 looks likely to be a February release (if samples are around now which they appear to be).

Now to me it appears the 5000 will be 2.6ghz and the FX 2.8Ghz both duallies - my duallie wont go over 3.1Ghz now, not a temp issue really (as my 55 runs hotter @ 3.511Ghz) more like very close the the top end of it's performance (although some go faster it's not common).

So it begs the question what will the skt939 speed ceiling be for dual core cpu's? I guestimate 3.4Ghz will be the norm under normal phase which will be reachable by both CPU's which begs the question why FX?

I think its possible that it is not recognising the 2nd core?

You're probably right - but is the speed of one of the cores comparable to a 57?

I still got the 55 in at the moment - so I'll DL CPUMark and report back at 200x14 to see.

Cheers

M2 has been delayed, but theres meant to be a move to 940pin setups first- the only change being DDR1 to DDR2 RAM. There`ll be some new CPUs, but only new in terms of official speed. Will that be worth it? (new mobo, CU and RAM)

One or 2 benchmarks might take advantage of raw RAM Mhz (CPC) but will the trade-off in timings be worth it?

I wont upgrade straight away - unless I see a review that shows it's better for OC'ing, new releases are always dodgy at best and 940 if they do go that way first will be like skt754.

Then you could speculate that skt 940 is gonna be the mobile set-up and (if they do that right) water/air cooled rigs (or SFF) may benefit from the lower temps which could (if they get it right this time) mean stellar overclocks (as in Mobile Barton cores on SKTA).

If they do it wrong, then it'll be as popular as the original SKT754.

CBA to change CPU speed but at 260x12 I scored 400points.

EDIT: at 12x233 (2.8Ghz) score was 336

When I put the duallie back in I'll test that too, FFS not another benchmark!!
