Righty, after my main motherboards usb's stopped working i decided to have a downgrade till the new sets of graphics cards are out.

with my parts i built

Foxconn C51XEM2AA (am2 sli mobo)

Athlon x2 6000+

4x1 gb xms2 800 (4-4-4-12)

4850 with a 8800gt for physics & folding

500GB & 1.5TB sata HDD's

and my 680watt tagan TG680-U33II superrock lighting series (20+4)

as it all worked on last use i just set it all up in an antec 300 with neat cable management ect ect.

Hook it up to my monitor and plug it in, psu lights up, i hit the power button..... NOTHING, i think not to worry, i might have forgot to plug the power/reset in, hit the onboard power button.... again NOTHING, here i get angry and storm off for 20 mins, come back check all the cables try again... same, nothing.

I dig out a 500 watt hyper psu (20+4) hook that up with just the 500 gig hdd, 1 stick of ram and the 4850, again.... nothing.

Next i dig out the 700 watt alienware psu (solid 24) that came with my case, hooked it up crossed my fingers... and it posted no problem, it randomly cuts out/resets every few mins but i think that might be because its getting (6+ years old mabey?).

Right if you skipped to here basicaly, my mobo wont post or anything with any 20+4 psu connectors yet it worked with a solid 24 pin.

1. Is it worth getting a 20 to 24 pin converter to try

2. Could it be the motherboard thats broke/starting to break

3. Does anyone have ANY idea's?

I think it's just luck that it booted with your Alienware PSU. There's probably an issue with the motherboard (or other components) that is tripping out the other PSU's but the Alienware one isn't quite as sensitive.

First of all unplug all non-essential components. Also try swapping out any other stuff you can if you've got spares (Memory / GPU..etc)

If still no joy RMA the mobo imo.

Since you have switched out motherboards i would check for shorting in the case.

Use rubber / card washers on the stand offs.

A simple way to test is to pull the board out and plug her up on the motherboard box, benching stylee.

Then do as Jim says, rule out other components.

There is no difference between 20+4 and 24 pin plugs. they are merely compatible with older sockets too.

ok thanks for the replys guys, ill test a 20 to 24 converter as i found an old one earlyer, if that works then it looks like it just not liking 20+4's, if not then ill rip it all out and test it on a box. ill be back with my findings later.

after booting up on a box it was working fine so reckon something was shorting it out in the case itself. now just installing tiny xp in a longer timeframe than a normal xp install has ever taken ( crappy old disc drive )
