This will be my first time building a rig and this was what I was thinking about. Is this possible? Any recommended changes? Any tips?

Case- Haf X blue edition

GPU- 2x GTX 680 (Galaxy)

Motherboard- Gigabyte Assassin 2

Water Cooling- XSPC Rasa 750 kit with 360mm radiator

Storage- Intel 520 SSD (240 GB)

Western Digital 1 TB SATA 6.0

RAM- Corsair Vengence 16 GB

Power Supply- SeaSonic PLUS Platinum 1000w

Processor- i7 3930K

Monitor- Asus UG278H 3D

Blue-ray/DVD/CD- Asus Black 12x

It would work well but if this is a gaming rig then you are spending several hundred ££s more than you need to on the platform (cpu/mobo/ram). You could also get a 690 instead of 2x 680s.

Is the 690 worth it, also can someone explain to me the difference between dual sli and single sli? Also, what would you recommend instead of what I have listed?

Not sure if the 690 is worth it yet, but it does use a new chip and is supposedly as powerful as two 680's but more efficient and quiet.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I don't think "dual SLI" is a technical term. Dual SLI may be referring to having more that just two cards in SLI. Quad SLI would be using two dual GPU cards, such as two GTX 690s. If you have 4 GTX 680's both pairs running in SLI, that would be Dual SLI?

Well the 690 performs the same as 2x 680s for a few quid less (check out aria for prices).

People seem to have a thing about the 680 which I don't quite understand since it performs only as well as a 7970 but costs quite a bit more. If you are an overclocker then buy 7950s for around the £300 mark each and they perform as well or better than the 7970/680 even when they themselves are overclocked.

I'd get a 3570k with a decent z77 board (any of the boards around the £150 mark are excellent - the msi GD65 for example). You'll also only need 8gb of RAM. Virtually any standard 1600 mhz RAM will do such as the corsair vengeance series. There's no need to get fast ram or bigger capacity.

Was typing literally the same thing and you got in there just before me

is the Sabertooth z77 with the stupid thermal armor stuff any good? Are other boards just as good as that? Also, is the 1000w power source too much?

It performs the same as the others but isn't the most energy efficient. The armour does precisely nothing - get it if you like the look!

I am also wondering If instead of the 3D I should just run a few monitors?

Niche choices eitherway. Some people love 3 monitors, some people like 3D. I have a 3D set up which I use for Skyrim and BF3 (want to try Shogun next). It's good fun but not somethin I do all the time. Personally I'm not a fan of the 3 screen set up but if you dig it then go for it. 2 top end pcie3 cards will handle either.

And no. This isn't like the 590 being two underclocked 580s... the 690 is a different chip. Not two 680s. Although, as it is said to be the power of two 680's I can see why you stated that.

Oh, interesting. I didn't know that. Makes me wonder why the 680 isn't much better than it is then, I'm surprised they have saved something that good for just one card.

Actually, you know what... I was mistaken. I guess I read something wrong or heard a rumor.

This is where Kepler's fanatical focus on power efficiency pays off most handsomely. The GPUs on the GeForce GTX 690 have a boost clock of 1019 MHz, just a hair (2.8%) shy of the GeForce GTX 680 at 1058 MHz. What's more, all other specs are identical; the number of cores, memory speed, and memory bandwidth per GPU are the same on both cards.

What this means is that the GeForce GTX 690 performs more or less just like a pair of GeForce GTX 680s in SLI; almost nothing was compromised in bringing two Kepler GPUs to the same board.

My bad.

from what i can see 690's are just for those who want more than one. I mean the differences are virtually nil between 2x680 vs 690. and by me purchasing 680's i can stagger the cost.
