First build in 10 years :)

Hey everyone.

I've been a laptop user for such a long time, and I really wanted to start getting back into PC gaming, so I decided to build my own gaming computer after catching up on research on the components over the past month. I'm almost done with finishing the final touches to the build, so I thought I'd post a few pictures and see what others think so far.

Specs:
Case: Fractal Design Arc Midi R2
Motherboard: Asus Z77 Sabertooth
CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K @ 4.4GHz
CPU Cooling: Corsair H100i
RAM: 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws X
GPU: EVGA Geforce GTX 670 FTW 2GB
PSU: Corsair AX760
HDD: 1TB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm

Just got some Corsair SP120 Quiet Editions to push/pull the H100i, and am looking into some sleeved cables to finish it up. Still need to get a SSD though, but that will come at some point.

Have to keep it on the ground next to my TV right now since I don't have a monitor yet, but I kind of like using my TV as my monitor since a lot of the games I play nowadays use a controller anyway. I can't decide what colour I should keep my LED's at, but I quite like the red or white LEDs.

Any other recommendations or thoughts? I'm really starting to like how my computer has turned out, so I'm quite happy.

very nice and tidy i prefer the white leds tbh look at maybe getting a 24" monitor the dell ips is awesome and can be had under £175

Thanks for the response!

Yeah I've always liked the Dell Ultrasharps, I used to have one of the old U2709s a while back. As for the LEDs, I really like the white as well. I'll probably keep it as white and then get some red extension cables for the PSU to add a dash more of red into it.

I also have to look into replacing the rest of the case fans for more of the Corsair ones, that way they all match.

I can already tell this will be my new addiction lol

Yeh I was just gonna say that rear exhaust is begging to be changed out for an AF140 quiet edition. :D. Also, you might want to look into painting the PCI slot covers black as well. They were one of the first things my eyes went to lol.

On the question of the LED color, I'd go with white as well, as it like subtly highlights all the features of the rig, instead of washing it out in a flood of red. :)

Last thing, that cable toward the front side, you might want to look into pulling that up behind the mobo tray a bit more, as it looks kind of wonky just looping out there like that. Probably just my OCD, though.

Well if my build ends up being white and red on the inside, I think the PCI covers might accent it well, we'll see. :D

Which cable are you talking about? The USB 3 header one? The problem with that cable is that the header port on the motherboard is on it's side, instead of going straight up. Also, the cable is ridiculously stiff so that was the best I could do to bend it and hide it away behind the motherboard tray. It was too tight of a bend to put it through the cable grommets.

If there was some sort of USB 3 front panel header extension cable, then that would probably help out. Off to do some Googling now. :p

No I mean the one coming out of the PSU on the left side, if you were looking at the connectors, and like loops out and touches the HDD cage toward the front. I think it's the 24 pin main power cable. Try tucking that up behind the mobo tray a bit more, as I think it'd look a lot better.

I feel like getting the full replacement sets are quite expensive, since I won't be using all of the cables. Here in Canada it would be around $150+ after shipping and taxes, and that's just a lot of money for some cables. I was looking at getting the BitFenix extensions in red,and then redoing my cable management behind my system to make it all pretty.

Ah okay. When you said you were looking at getting sleeved cables for it, my mind went straight away to the Corsair cable kit lol. The extensions will look just as nice, I think.

Yeah I would love to get the full set that way it can be the solid colour all the way through, but that's a lot of money.

I saw the BitFenix ones at the local computer store, and they even had some obscure one that the Corsair ones wouldn't have had, like the USB header, front panel headers, and the front panel audio header for about $4 each. Bundled with the cables I need (8 pin EPS, 24 pin ATX, 2 x 6 pin PCI-e) total cost is about $50 after taxes. So that's about a 3rd of what the Corsair set would cost me. the only things I would lose out on are the SATA power cables, but those aren't even visible in my rig, same with the 8 pin power one too, so I could probably cut the cost down even more.

Thanks for the comment. I've been going back and forth with the LED colours (loving the NZXT Hue controller btw). I think I'll stick with white for now. Just gotta finish adding some more red accents and it should be all done :)

I'll definitely post some more pictures when I get around to finishing it.

Good going with the build. I know how hard it is when you've been out of the loop for ages to get a parts list together.

Hi DeusInvictus,
Nice rig , good job and welcome back to building.
I agree with others here on the white LED's , I think the red led kind of washes everything out .
Maybe paint the pci covers red , and red extension cables like you were saying.

I know this thread is a couple of weeks old, but I really think you should push and get an SSD in there and you'd have a solid build there to last you a while.

Trust me they are worth it and it's better to get it in there early on rather than dreading it later down the line after your install has matured.

Yeah an SSD is definitely something I'll be adding in, just gotta save some money now though, stupid car repair stuff I have to take care of first.

Thanks for the welcome. I have really started liking the white LEDs, it accents the red quite nicely, and I've actually added some red extension cables for the 24pin, front panel audio and USB header. I'm still waiting on the 6pin VGA extensions to come in, apparently not many places have them in stock in Canada. I'll post some pictures of the progress in a bit.

As for painting the pci covers, I'll have to look into that, I wasn't really planning on making those kinds of mods just yet, but we'll see.

Also, would any of you guys have any suggestions as to making my pc more quiet? I've actually gone and returned a pair of the SP120s that were in the pull position since they were making a buzzing noise at low RPMs, and have replaced them with Noctua NF-P12s. The fans themselves all over my case are quite quiet, but I think my case just leaks noise since it's made to be a high airflow case. Should I be looking into noise dampening materials for the side panels? How else can I reduce the noise when it's just idling in a quiet room?
