Finally got an SSD

I finally jumped on the SSD bandwagon and picked up a Samsung 840 non-pro 120gb :)

I've ran crystal disk mark, and I was just wondering weather everything seemed in order. Also, I've disabled indexing, hibernating, system restore and enabled AHCI. Anything else I can do? I noticed Tom's PC boots before the windows logo finishes, but Mine doesn't... +/-50mb/s can't make THAT much difference can it?

Welcome to the SSD master race

You can also move or resize your page file. I had problems when I did though and got BSODs in some games and programs.

I stuck the pagefile at 2048 max, that should be fine, right? I've never seen my 4gb RAM max out so a small pagefile shouldn't really be a problem, should it?

try a reboot
also unplug any external harddrives. takes me about 20 seconds longer to boot with my external hdd plugged in. no idea why

I'm not to sure to be honest, I don't know much about the page file. I read about doing it in a SSD optimization guide, but after having problems after doing it I just set it back to default.

Samsung also have a program call SSD Magician that will do all the optimization for you and clean up your SSD to improve performance.

I don't really use external drives since I have to NAS at home... And the re boot still didn't finish before the start animation...

It's not really something that bothers me, it's just pretty cool to have your PC boot before the animation.

I'd honestly prefer to do them all myself, that way I have a little bit of insight into what I'm doing. Feels less noobish than just pressing one button :P

Just remembered another thing I read, not sure if makes much of a difference though.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2025058/answer-line-move-data-files-from-an-ssd-to-a-hard-drive.html

I did this already since my music/video collection is massive. Guess I should have mentioned it in my OP, sorry.

Nice write up dude but I've already done most of the things you mention :)

Never mind, this thread was just me checking if I'm a retard and I'd cocked anything up... Guess I'm not. That's new :)

MSI suggests to enable hotplug for the ssd as well.

here is my bench from my vertex 4 256 on windows 8.

Does your PC boot before the Windows Animation finishes?
If it does, would it make sense to think that for some reason during startup windows writes files, and since my write speeds aren't great (advertised as 130, I'm getting 133-135... not bad) I can't boot as quickly as others?

EDIT : Just realised, sorry for making separate posts. Next time I'll remember to use the edit button.

on windows 8 it just does a wee spinning dots thing, does that once and a little bit sometimes twice, then i see that start screen that windows 8 is so hated for :P.

my friend has the same SSD and when we were both on windows 7 my desktop with i3 booted faster than his i7 laptop.

My pagefile is set at 512mb for inital and max. All it does is save space(making it smaller gives you more storage back) for windows boot errors, memory errors, bsod, and driver failures. This can stack up quick. I have tried it before and got my Gpu driver to fail and when i started up disk cleanup i had over 2gb of system erros lol. It will only show less than 512mb because that's what i set it to but if you keep running disk cleanup it will keep finding all of it.

type services in the windows search, start as admin, search for superfetch and disable it

If you disable this what does it do exactly?
