Few eSATA questions

1. Do the SMART functions work over eSATA?

2. Is it much faster than USB?

3. Not really SATA related, but does leaving a drive on 24/7 diminish its life expectancy?

Short n sweet

I don't know much about SMART functions, but I do know that eSATA is indeed far faster than USB. Even bottlenecked by an ExpressCard interface on my mobile, eSATA still scores far higher on any hdtach read/write test than a USB hard drive will.

1.5/3.0 Gbps vs. 480Mbps, do the math =)

1. I'd say so as eSATA is literally just another SATA port but sitting on the I/O backplate. Unless you mean via an eSATA card? In which case it would depend on what the card supports.

2. Same as internal pretty much (same rule above applies tbh).

3. Hard to say tbh. Personally i'd think that the constant powering up and down (heating up/cooling down) would do more damage than leaving it on 24/7.

Cheers for the responses guys.

Think ill give it a go when i get home. Fingers crossed the smart works as this drive is a refurb and im hoping its not going too crap out sometime soon being on 24/7.
