Fan Crapping Out?

Yep, I think my GPU fan is calling it quits :( At least twice now in the past 24 hours my computer froze up and when I looked inside, the LEDs on my card were out. I couldn't actually see the fan since another fan is in the way, so I can't be sure. Or maybe the whole card is slowly dying... Anyways, the problem is... well, I'm sure you can guess (after all, where are we? ;)) So I'm kinda out of sorts of what I should do, whether I should try to RMA or not. Note that soon (once I get a cooler) I will be putting in a new card and this old one will be going into the family computer, so I have to make sure it's going to work out all right before then.

Are you able to monitor the temperature of your GPU? (i.e. through the Display or NVIDIA icons in the Control Panel) If so how high is the temperature at idle & under load? That might tell you if there is a problem with your GPU fan.

Well, now I'm really at a loss at what the problem is/was. I came home from school on Thursday to find that my video card wasn't working on boot. Before, when it froze, I could get it to boot up again, though I had to truly turn it off instead of a restart. This time, though it just wouldn't work. So I reseated it, and voila, it worked fine. Haven't had any of the "no fan" problem in 3 days (then again, near as I know it only happened twice). Unfortunately, I still got the occasional freeze. So I figured out that I was clocking my RAM past its limits as it wasn't able to pass SuperPI 32M. Clocked it down (and decided to go back 3 ghz :D) no more freezeups during the day. For some reason, when I leave my computer on overnight to fold, I wake up to find that video is gone, the fan is back at top speed, and when I restart my FSB has gone down to 200!! I really have no bloody clue what is up, whether it be memory, motherboard, or GPU, since as I mentioned it works perfectly fine during the day  Well, we'll see whether it does this again tonight.

Wow, that's odd! Reset to default settings in BIOS and either re-flash, or see if theres a newer BIOS :)

Almost sounds like PSU though... from what you said it makes it seem like you only fold @ night, so that would be directly linked to increase power load.

it could just be your monitors going to sleep and and not refreshing when you move the mouse i have seen it happen before try a different monitor or turn off power saveing

Sounds like you Ram may be overheating to me. Very rare i know, but it does happen.

The fact that downclocking it helped makes me think that. You have a thermal probe you can use to check the temps on it?

Just to say, I fold all day, so your guess probably isn't right nick. Also, again, this only happens at night which is the coldest time, so I really don't see how my RAM could be overheating then if it doesn't during the day.

Keep the suggestions coming. I mean, I could always just turn off my computer at night, but it really would be nice to be able to fold during that time.

What are your power settings? Maybe it could be that the machine is trying to standby and is not managing to come out of it.

Hmm, I don't find that too likely as I know I've had at least 3 nights (when I first started folding again) where it made it through. So unless something changed without me knowing (I suppose that could be likely :p ) that shouldn't be the case.
