Entry level gaming setup

I am building a new entry level gaming PC. From my preavious tread, i conclude to two configurations

1: Intel i5 2500 (non K)

Intel DH67CL

Gigabyte 6770 1GB GDDR5

2: AMD Phenom II X4 970

Asus M5A97

MSI R6850 Cyclone Power Edition (OC'ed, 1GB GDDR5)

Ramaining Parts

OCZ Force 3 60GB (boot only)

Corsair CX500 500W (12v single rail)

Corsair value 2GB x 2 (DDR 1333)

About me:

I am not a hardcore gamer, i prefer FPS and third person games like GTA,AC etc. Not interested in MMO, Strategy or sports except racing. I use MATLAB, Visual Studio etc. I dont use my pc for heavy transcoding or Video/photo editing or 3D creation.

I terms of processing power, i know i5 is best. But in gaming, what will be the difference in framerate of above two setups? I have a 24inch 1920x1080 monitor, so i prefer full HD gaming.

Does the difference can be too much?

I currently have a Phenom 965 with a 5830, so similar to you, and on the same motherboard.

The i5 will out perform the phenom yes, but the 6770 is actually a 5770 with different branding so you'd be buying basically a 3 year old card getting the 6770.

I would definitely go for the AMD build. If that is your maximum budget. Although, I would probably upgrade to a 6870 as you can get some for a very similar price to a 6850 these days. Both processors will perform easily well enough in games, so it will honestly not make a difference, maybe 1fps max with intel, but the better card on the AMD will give you far more FPS extra on the gaming anyway.

As a guess, i'd say the overall difference in framerates will be around 7/8fps in favour of the AMD build.
 
Because you say you are not a hard core gamer I would suggest choosing the intel build with the lower spec graphics card. The Intel would be about 52% better CPU performance then the AMD. Which would be beneficial for Video/photo editing or 3D creation? Edit: sorry read the original post wrong. I would still choose the better CPU.

Why not combine the best of both worlds and build the I5-2500 with the R6850. This way you have the better of the processors and the better of the GPU's.

Also I would suggest finding some better ram.

Unfortunately i can't afford a i5 2500+6850. So i am listing some cards that i can afford with i5 2500. Help me to pick one, if i am going for intel

1: Gigabyte 6770 (already mentioned)

2: Gigabyte 7750 (1GB GDDR5)

3: Gigabyte 550 Ti (GV-N550D5-1GI, 1GB GDDR5)

4: Sapphire 6790 (1GB GDDR5)

Both the motherboards that i listed have 4 DIMM slots, i am planning to upgrade a pair of 4GB sticks in future, to a total 12GB. Thats why i choose these sticks. I am not interested in overclocking the PC (impossible with intel setup).So a 1333MHz ram is enough for me. Apart from these, is there any other reason to keep away from those sticks?

Sapphire 6790 (1GB GDDR5) Is the best of the bunch. When I first read the post I missed read and thought you where doing photo/video rendering that is why I suggested better ram.
 
i have a 5770, i used to run it on phenom 2 550 dual core, i now run it on a 2500k, the performance is much better on 2500k but even on a low spec it was fast enough to play anything on medium settings
