Enermax have gone mad

You cant ask a bunch of peeps that spend silly money on over the top gizmo's for their rig if a certain company's going over the top imo.

I think this is going to be the trend in the future with the top PSU's makers. I remember a few years back somebody sating a similar thing when online store's started stocking 550w PSU's

Whats The Big Deal

Some people do need that kind of power. Ive been running two Enermax 550W power supplies for the last year on my server / games machine. Its got 10 hard drives and SLI . Also you can never have to much power and even if you dont need a 1000 watt power supply wouldent it make sence to have a 1000w psu running at say 50% of it capacity than a 500w psu running flat out and not lasting all that long.

Just makes sense to me.

This site calculates that I need 710W and that's with a hugely underestimated graphics power consumption. I could probably do with 800W according to that and I'm only using a turbocool 510 SLi. 1000W is not unreasonable at all.

Also yogibear please fill in that power consumption page - I want to see what it says you need.

Mine says I need 614w for the duallie set-up and SLI (although SLI settings dont go up to 600/1500) so it's closer to gollums calculations with that as a given.

will check on FX too but looks like it will be similar.

EDIT: FX55 rig needs 562w based on a massively underclocked SLI set-up - Gollum - where's all the power going in yours mate?

Well it said 710 for me but that was with 490/whatever on the cards not 630/1550 and more volts. The extra power over yours probably came from my "estimate" of my cascade cpu clocks and voltage ;). I was looking ahead to see whether I should upgrade rather than inputting my current clocks. If it had X1800XTs in the gfx list I would like to see what it's at with them instead too. At over 700W I think I'm stretching my turbocool 510 :o.

Cheap shot, but I like your style :)

On the other hand - it has to assume that all components are being used at once - thats not always the case.

Yep probs time to upgrade my friend, but what too? The daddy looks like a good option, but I also hear that there are several 700w units just around the corner - having read the extensivve reviews in CPC this month there are only a chosen few that I would actually look at (from a manufacturer point of view)

Well not really. As you said it calculates your maximum power consumption (as though all components are in use) so surely if I'm going to power my CPU with cascade voltage/speed then I want to know what power I'm going to use then. I'm only really concerned about the maximum amount of juice I'm trying to get out of my PSU.
