Elderly drivers - llwyds solution (VERY off topic)

tbh the UK have sort of shot themselves in the foot with the driving test. it would be impossible to make elderly drivers retake a driving test when they reach XX years of age, because all the the habits they have picked up over the 50 years of driving, would mean they fail their test!

since thr is such a large different between being able to drive and being able to pass a test, i bet you that 90% of elderly drivers would fail.

i mean, i bet most of them cross their hands on a steering wheel, and when they learnt to drive, block changing down gears was the norm. These days you would get a minor fault every time you did that, and 4 of those = fail.

There are loads more aswell, i mean do you think they all check their blindspots every time they move away, or check the rear-view mirror when they slow down? no, they wont because they havent been taught that way.

QFT

I admit i dont check my blindspots all the time. I hate boy racers more than old people. Driving around like idiots thinking they look good with a coffee table stuck to the back of thier car. Because of them, my insurance on a citreon AX 1L debut (H reg) was £1400. How stupid is that.

and do you feel your driving is below standards? i expect it isnt. what im saying is that the UK driving test isnt a great indication of driving ability, although i have no better ideas, so meh.

and erm, coffee table stuck to the back of their car? i dont get it?

Spoiler dave, wake up :p

.. well younger male drivers do cause the majority of the insurance claims

Thats only because the young male drivers write off the car totaly, where as old people are going too slowly to do that much damage, there for it can be fixed for a few tenners.

Ive only been driving (including learning time) a year and 7 months. And i must say the experience ive gained has taught me too use lots of what i had too use on my driving test, just use it more casually. I check my blind spots when i NEED too, eg the M4 @ 8:30 am *shudder*. Usually I dont drive more than 10-20mph over the speed limit if i am speeding, so as not too cause inconvenience too others. These areas are where old people fail imo. They barely move there heads about 10° when pulling out and pull out slower than someone walking on the pavement, they swerve out onto the other side of the road when theres a plastic bad lying over a drain, they indicate for miles, then turn it off then turn the opposite way without warning. As for inconvenience they drive slower than the tractors around here, and even the tractors have the decency too pull over and let you by. Where as they just plod along. The number of times me and llwyd have been late too collage 'cos of an old person doing 25mph on a 60 limit road you wouldn't believe. And to make it worse the somehow manage too speed up too 40, but only to get around the harshest corners, then they're right back too 25.

And for thoughs who say 'don't stereotype'. Its not the minority that are like it (around here at least). Its the vast majority. Me and Llwyd were quite impressed too see an old person doing about 55 mph the other day. They only come along once every blue moon.

Ah I c, so totally writing off a car is better than a `scrape`. If I`m asked which car I`d chose to be in at the time of an accident - I wonder which option would save my life more. lol

(I`m on a tear btw)

I thought u`d come with the arguement of there being more young male drivers out there.

I never said anything about which ever is 'better'.

The point being that you dont claim on insurance for £50-100 of body repairs. Where as you do if the car has rolled 3 times and is currently roasting sheep in a field.

And there are fewer young male drivers than incompetent old people in my area. And due too traffic conditions im guessing that you just wouldn't notice them in more built up areas.

If u`r roasting lamb, I guess u stop paying insurance right there and then, nothing to pay for.

I thought the no-claims game, outside of those having to pay 1000s, was a bit of a non issue these days. Most peoples I know challenge their company to be cheap and if they aint they go somewhere else. Then their company comes back to them with "a deal".

yes rast, but with young drivers, a "deal" is paying £1500 instead of £1600, whereas for most drivers it is affordable.

no claims still makes a diference, although less than it used to. its usually based on age and how long you have had a licence

pffft go on u`r parents, u can share no claims these days :p or buy a car whilst 16/17 and pay insurance even tho u aint driving it..

I dunno, I mean if there`s a cross-section of drivers who`s favorite idea for a use of a car is to wreck a lamppost, speed through lights whilst drunk/stoned - similarly race each other, nick one, write-off there`s and another persons, kill people, drive without licenses, look at females instead of the road (don`t tell me u never done that), think they`re the best drivers in the universe, use their phones, put makeup on (oops that weemin), change lanes without indicating, drive too close, drive too aggressively, impressing their m8s means too much, some1 `cuts them up` (in their opinion) - "ooo I`m having `im"...

I`d charge em £5000 basic lol

JUst saying, how are spoilers signs of boy racers? On some cars, spoilers look good, and on some they don't. I think it's really dumb to claim that a spoiler is a sign of a boy racer. I do agree that soemtimes they are very stupid and part of ricermobiles but at times a spoilers looks good.

Side note:

Did anyone else look at the thread title and think it would be about drivers for something called Elders?

:D

On what car? Im guessing it wasn't a slow, broken up pos like most of us drive.

after a year of driving mine was £2200 for a X reg fiesta zetec s. Not exactly a quick car.

Ah, but there`s an "t" in u`r name, that all falls into the T-subdescriptor, paragraph A, subsection C, entitled "Why T`s should pay more!".

Big culprits here are Tony`s - they tried to get away with signing up as Anthony, this is why they changed the ruling to a "T" anywhere in u`r name.
