editing/encoding

Hi guy quick question , what would be the best cpu motherboard combo for video encoding/editing, budget is not much of a problem would it be worth getting the i7 8700K or i7 7820x or a threadripper 1950X now or would it be worth to wait a few months and get the new ryzen+ , if in fact they do come out in a few months otherwise its whats best available option now ?

Do you need it now?
Yes, get the threadripper for price/performance or with no budget constraints go intel
No, wait for zen2

I do editing and encoding using a threadripper 1920x and have no complaints about the performance. The only intel cpus that can beat the threadrippers in this type of workload are the x299 i9's.

Usually TR, though if you use Adobe software they don't scale well with 12+ cores for some reason. 12 core threadripper is more or less equal to the 16 core model, and even coffee lake can perform as well. But it's an outlier.

If you can use ffmpeg or similar to leverage all the cores available there's no contest, but you should do research for the software you're planning to use.

To my understanding they're using their threadripper for encoding their video backlog with Handbrake, which does work well with it. Premiere doesn't, unless there has been a patch to it. That's not to say Premiere is slow with TR, just not quicker than cheaper alternatives.

Premiere does love high clockspeed.

As mentioned above it depends on whether or not your workloads depend more on clock speeds of thread counts.
