hi guys, this might be a totally stupid question, but here goes. i have a msi r9-290x lightning, the problem is that it's a dx11.2 card, with the new re-branded 390x, that's a dx12 card. are we going to be able to patch the 290x to be dx12??? knowing that they are basically the same cards and could we crossfire them?. i do not really want to flash the bios on the card incase there are issues that we don't know about, surely they will be patchable won't they. thanks for any answers in advance.

Yup, all GCN gpus can do dx12 :)
As for crossfiring them, I've no idea. I would assume you should be able to as they are the same, but drivers might make it not possible, but then gain rumours have been flying about talking of DX12 helping to support multiple gpu setups without the need for sli or crossfire etc.

All current GCN cards will have DX12 as low level API, but not with full feature ( feature level 12_0 )

The only current cards compatible with feature level 12_1 are the ones from GTX 900 series ( and the Titan X obv ) AFAIK

The 290 series will support DX12 as well as any GCN card. I believe the 290 series is the only one that will feature DX12.1(full feature DX12) while other older GCN architectures will only support basic DX12 but the differences between the two won't be so great. Also remember that DX12 isn't really focusing on the GPU. It's almost entirely fixing the issues with CPUs. You won't magically gain another 20FPS just by switching from DX11 to DX12.
