It got so bad that a guy from Corsair wrote his own driver
Asus do many, many things well. Making sound cards is not one of them tbh. I mean if you're running a studio music creation set up then awesome, but in gaming they really are awful. My friend paid $400 for it (I too had a D2X) about three years back. He became so annoyed at it that he sent me it, free. I got rid of it within three weeks. Beautifully made, gorgeous sound, but awful terrible drivers.
Ed.. I just remembered what else it would do !
In gaming it would get stuck in a sound loop.. So let's describe it as "final lap !". It would get stuck, and go "lap lap lap lap lap lap" and refuse to stop. Even back at the windows desktop
The only fix was to disable it in control panel and re-enable it.. Honestly though man, worst experience I have ever had with a single piece of hardware ever. Get an Xfi of sorts. They've really come good lately.

Pick up an Xonar Essence. I'd also trust King_Of_Sand on this one, he's generally the first one to answer in the sound department. Those crashing reports are from 2 years ago, I'm sure ASUS have done something about this now.

I had mine around 6 months ago. They hadn't released a driver since 2009.
It seems they are back on the ball now, which is nice to see, considering they just used to ignore people.

Was the fix. It was a guy at Corsair who had modified the essence drivers. I too tried disabling GX mode, and the essence drivers, but it made no difference.
I also really didn't like that it needs a floppy power connector to function. Most modern PSUs (mine included) didn't even have one, so I had to cut one off of an old PSU and lop off a molex and break the solder iron out. The socket was also woefully loose.
Even if the driver problems were all fixed I would still prefer to get an XFI. Creative = experts in sound cards. Asus = experts in motherboards.

Yeah the hardware looks old (it is) but this was actually around a year ago and was at the time my media PC. Nothing but problems tbh. However, I'll say that it was definitely driver based and other than all the crashing and problems it did sound very nice indeed through my hifi. Probably among the best I've heard.

Which did you prefer? Is the price difference worth it for the D2X with mostly headphone use?

The D2X will offer MUCH nicer sound. BUT ONLY if you have good sound equipment. If you are planning on using this with gaming headphones you will notice very little difference if any at all. If you are using something like Klipsch Image one's, bose, or beats audio, then go with the DX2. If you are looking for just gaming sound GO with the DX, or with a nice Creative sound blaster card. If you are using headphones mostly i recommend this (http://www.asus.com/Multimedia/Audio_Cards/Xonar_Essence_STX/) because of its dedicated headphone amp, so even cheap headphones will sound nice.

I just picked up another Xonar DX for a client of mine (He is a audio editor) so incredible sound reproduction is a must. The Xonar DX is VERY high performance and a WAY larger bang for the buck than ANYTHING Creative Labs has. I'm not saying they don't offer great products but in terms of quality creative has nothing over the Xonar DX (except for there one audiophile card). You have to remember (with the exception of the audiophile card) Creative cards are meant to be loud, not focused on clarity.
I'm going with AlienATX on this one. The D2X had awful drivers, especially with Fallout/Oblivion. I had to replace it with the creative alterntive. The sound quality was excellent, and the digital output I use for my server is also excellent, but the outright stupid floppy disk power connector which looks untidy and has a tendency to become disconnected was a pain.
The main thing I will say is that it is great for music, but not for gaming.

They fixed ALL those issues already. In fact i was just playing Oblivion on my DX2 and DX, and no sound issues. ALSO, REALLY? You are complaining about a power cable??

Or if you want you can get yourself a dedicated headphone amp along with it. Thats what i did with my Xonar DX. Except i had mine specially tuned for my Klipsch Image One headphones.
