Do psu companies have a designer ?

Hi,

For quite a while now, it bothers me that every single psu on the market is nothing more than a rectangular box with a sticker on it and sometimes an led fan.

Is it really that hard to make one look good ? I wanted to write this straight after I watched Tom's latest review because for some reason it reminded me of a psu I saw at CeBit, After I sneaked into the press hall, I saw a Sharkoon psu. Now I know you'll all say "meh, a Sharkoon psu" but the thing was absolutly gorgeous with it's rounded off edges and hexagonal cut-outs. The annoying part is that it's impossible to find any information about it as they still haven't taken it into production and I didn't take a picture off it because I thought it would be all over the internet. I think there's a huge marked out there for nicely designed psu's, Xilence seems to try a little bit and so does BeQuiet, but in my opinion it's not enough at all. Btw, I did just write a mail to Sharkoon about how that psu is doing.

Anyone else here bothered by the lazyness off psu designers ?

Oh and ofcourse, if you know a good looking psu, please share.

they have to follow standards based upon the ISA (international standards authority).

your debate could also be used for :the mounting pins on all motherboards; the dimensions of all HDD bays; the 'kettle lead' power-jack for the power cables (whether they are 2-pin or 3-pin(UK))..... etc...

you need to look further, than being 'near-sighted', for you question(s) to be answered.

I'm aware off those rugulations, but atx spec says it has to be 140mm, and have those 4 screws correctly positioned like with the I/O and mb screws on a motherboard. There are plenty psu's out there that are longer so lenght clearly isn't important. It just have to have the right mounting plate for it to be atx.

I think I prefer it all black with a sticker. Yeh it's not the prettiest thing in the world, but it's in the bottom back corner of your case, usually away from any windows anyway.

Also, if they were all designed, buying one now may not fit in with a future upgrade. I prefer a power supply to be a part I dont have to think about when I upgrade my PC, hence why I've just bought an AX850. ther than rounded off edges though, what more do you suggest? The Xilence one looks like Wall-e and you have to pay a premium for it. The new corsair GS series does look better though. Well, better as in cooler and more aimed at 12 year olds that buy a product because it has lights on it.

I'd prefer really if the companies kept the all black with sticks style, as it presumably helps to keep price down a little, and to get a decent psu anyway it's always gunna be expensive.

If shape isn't an issue, but visual are, then I guess you could just try filming it? That'd add colour and hide stickers...

I agree, I think it's one of the few components where functions is far more important than form. it's the slave of any system. a dodgy graphics card that looks pretty will kill itself, but a dodgy power supply could kill off your entire system.
