DisplayLink is showing they can drive a 5K resolution (5120x2880 pixels) over a single universal USB Cable, using the latest commercially available Dell UltraSharp 5K monitor.

"DisplayLink is proud to demonstrate the scalability of its solutions with the highest commercially available monitor again at CES,” said John Cummins, Senior Vice President Sales and Marketing.“ 5K monitors with 5120x2880 resolutions were just released in Q4. DisplayLink is demonstrating dramatically simplified 5K connectivity to any PC, Notebook, or tablet using a single, completely standard, USB 3.0 cable, in comparison to dual DisplayPort cables currently required.”

DisplayLink both solves the 5K connectivity problem and equally enables non-5K PC, notebooks, and tablets to connect to 5K displays over a standard universal “Plug-and-Display” USB 3.0 cable connection. DisplayLink uses a standard off-the shelf Microsoft Surface Pro III, connected over a standard USB 3.0 cable to a DisplayLink-based docking station, to Dell’s new 5K UltraSharp UP2715K, 27” Monitor, enabled by DisplayLink’s latest 5K chipset.

I'm assuming this is at 30 fps... running that display, its quite a feat.
I thought 1080p was around 1.5-2Gbs and i thought standard USB 3.0 was 4.8Gbs ... unless it was USB 3.1 which is 10Gbs or so i have seen.
Unless encryption is amazing, or maybe a method they use on phones hmmm

Seriously what is going to run at 5K almost nothing is 4K yet but interesting non the less

I agree! Its exciting for more pixels, just like the 5K iMac, and now Dell is dipping its toes in but like you said there is hardly any content and that means even more juice will be needed from your GPU.

As for the frames-per-second, I can't find any evidence to suggest whether it will be at 30fps, or 60 yet. Seems they may have kept that bit quiet but I will keep digging.

I can't remember where I saw it but there was talk somewhere of 8K which is totally nuts!!

I'm not sure if 8k will be with computers anytime soon but there is talk of 8k coming to your living room. When I went with my Dad before Christmas to look for a new 4K TV, I asked the question about 8k and he said its been out in China (or was it Japan?) for years but it'll be like 10 years before it hits here. A few weeks later, there was talk of one of the leading brands releasing one here as early as next year (2015).

They will cost an absolute fortune though I'd imagine, at least for a year!

Nice write ups man! Only thing I have to correct is at the start of the second paragraph there are no quotation marks ;)
Other than that, you have a good writing style, I like it :)

Seems rather interesting too, I'm eager to see how this will turn out

Ah good I wasn't going nuts and did hear about it but imagine a monitor at that res you'd need a microscope to see your desktop icons LOL

Whoopsy, fixed it. :) Thanks dude, I often read the latest news around the web but never think to share it. Thought it was time to start giving back here a little, especially with Tom looking for writers. ;) Haha nah but seriously, I'm happy to give back whether paid or not. I have felt like I needed to put more out there and get out of the fap king role for a while now lol.

Beep deep beep and now we bring you our news of the day from the Fap Broadcasting Company the FBC......hell the BBC was getting old anyway right? ROFL, Sorry Shaun couldn't help myself :p

Hahaha, this made me think of fight club, the bit when they're in the cinema and when he's changing the tapes it flashes like half a second clips of porn. I could do that. ;)

It will have uses outside of gaming ;)

I remember watching a video explaining that once we get to 8K that will be pretty much the highest the human eye can perceive, Anything after that will be "Just because we can" ^_^

Very cool, I remember watching a video explaining that once we get to 8K that will be pretty much the highest the human eye can perceive, Anything after that will be "Just because we can" ^_^

Really? But that will mean that TV's will never get any better from the other than colour and added features?

Well once they get to 8K they will move to 16K but the difference to the human eye will be non existent, As you say they will just improve other things like colour etc... and maybe move onto a new type of tech :)

What happened to that TV were it was like a window and you could shut virtual blinds on it and stuff. That was awesome.
