Disabled posting news items?

Hey peeps.

In addition to the usual OC3D Rules and regs I would like to add some more:

*You are encouraged to post on the topics in here, but please keep it ON Topic!!

*If you would like to post links/additional info on the topic then please do, but the news team may add them into the initial post

*If we delete a post it is not because we don't like it/you, we just want to make this a discussion of the topic

*If you have news - Please bring it to a Mods/News Teams attention so that it can be posted in here. You WILL be given Full credit for your find :D

*If no mod/news team member is available, post the news but be aware it may be moved/expanded upon :wavey:

Thanks and happy posting!

Matt :wavey:

uh huh.

thats always been there, we could still post. news has been dead these last few days, used to get a shed load each day. now zip.

I think its because some people were just creating links to other news sites with a brief outline on the story, instead of writing a proper article. This is what we have the snippets section from the home page for.

sorry, but I disagree, some of our members get news from other sources rather than the mainstream channels that most news come from....if they are unable to post this info then surely it takes away from the community spirit?

tbh most of the news is just a copy and paste job(Not having a go at anyone, same as most forums)

Speaking for myself, I don't cut and paste any articles if I can help it. If I do, I only tend to do so on the press releases. With most articles I do try and create some unique content. I think that it can be unhelpful to see just links to other sites in the news, as people wuld just go direct to those sites over time. It's quite easy to put your own take on an article instead of just creating a link and intro, and surely this would be a better option?

I think people should still be allowed to post links where appropriate, but I still think a written article is better overall (when possible).

I think that people who want to post news should send PM's to the News Team first. This has not been happening at all recently and that's why the forum is closed for normal members.

If people can start doing this, then we will open the forum back up for threads when you've PM'd a news team member and not had a response in a reasonable time (say a few hours if it's not 1AM or something).

Sound fair?

EDIT: Actually let me just say that at one point we had user-posted content that was directly input into our CMS and all we had to do (in theory), was approve it. Now there were several issues with this, the main ones being:

* Not many people used it and those that did, did so infrequently.

* The standard of the articles was, quite frankly, appalling. Most people posted a line or so and a link and nothing more; or articles were so full of spelling and grammar errors that we may as well have written them ourselves, the time it took editing them.

There were some plus points though - some very interesting content came up at times.

Now personally I think that member-submitted content is an awesome idea...but the problem is that we have to keep standards on the site high, so it's just not practical.

Posting a one line quote and a link just doesn't strike me as viable to put on the front page and inevitably people will end up reading the article on the linked site rather than here...which somewhat defeats the object of news on OC3D.

i didn't realise that we used to be able to post news ourself. I almost sent a few articles in, but never got around to it. Actually, where do we send any news we find? Is there an email/PM address?

I also prefer news that has been given the OC3D treatment. If it's just a linked site or quote of a whole story, it will be biased by the original poster. Having news team members trawling the web should mean we get a couple of sources (and therefore viewpoints) on the big news.

To elaborate further upon what has been said in this thread. Those who were simply posting a copied part of another sites article and providing a link back to the site, this is actually hurting us. Sure you're providing us with some news, but the traffic then gets directed back to the source site for further reading of the article. We need and want that traffic.

For those who would like the opportunity to post user news etc then please feel free to send your article draft to me for proofing (via PM or email). Rastalovich has quite a number of times sent me a simple PM as a heads-up to some news, and he has been duly credited for the find. You will need to remember that I am 10 hours ahead of many of you in the UK, but if I am not about on the forum then I'm sure that either one of the members of the news team or admin/mod team will be able to proof it for you. I have included my oc3d email address below:

As Kempez said, there used to be a member news facility but it was taken down due to lack of use, and/or the quality of the material required the news team to have to basically rewrite the article from scratch. As you can understand this isn't really a viable option as we need the news team to be consistently getting news up, not reworking something that is full of grammatical errors etc.
