Hello sorry for not being around lately i have been very busy and just got around to building the last bit of my PC.

So i was just wondering if anyone would please help me as i can't seem to find a answer..

Would it be ok to put the 7900gtx i have in on pci-e4, the 2nd pci-e socket as the first pci-e socket is very near the heatsink and ram.

I found one answer on google saying the second run's at only 2x on a single graphic's card set-up and another saying it's fine so.

Please help

Rig as follows: AMD 3800x2 | TT Big Typhoon | 2gb Corsair XMS 4000PT TwinX | DFI SLI eXpert | Asus EN7900GTX | Tsunami Dream | Logitech G15 | Razer Diamondback Plasma | Tagan TG580 | BenQ DW1655 Lightscribe | BenQ FP937s | Logitech x530

Thankyou!! :)

as default the 2nd socket will run at 2x and the first at 16x.

if you move it into the second slot you will have to enable SLI which configures both slots to run at 8x.

Although it will work in the second as default, it will only run at 2x, and this may hinder performance. 8x should be fine however

Hope this helps

Yes the 2nd PCI-E 16x slot only runs at 2x when in single video mode. They are 16-1-1-2 single/8-no card-4-8 dual video. Is there a problem running it in the top slot other than it is close to the proc? I have no problems running mine there.

Dave, that is the SLI-DR you are talking about I think. The expert doesn't have SLI jumpers, it is all bios based. I just rebooted my expert comp to make sure and it is as I posted above.

ok twisted, my bad. i have had no experience with boards otehr than ultra-d, sli-d and sli-dr. i didnt realise they had changed it, ill edit my post :)

oh no problem dave. Just thought I would mention it. With my previous experience on a sli-d and sli-dr I would have assumed the same thing. It is actually pretty funny, they say the expert is a pain to set up yet the sli-dr was the worst for me. The expert has pretty much everything in the bios where the sli-dr has all the different jumpers to enable different things.

if you dont mind me asking, exactly why can't you use the first?

I'll add a pic in a few minute's, but basically i have a big typhoon and the 7900gtx is huge and it's basically touching each other.

I would have thought they would have been ok enless they are ACTUALY touching tbh. You could always sick a bit of anti-static bag between them if your worried about shorting. (ghetto solutions ftw:))

Looking at the pic you have a good cm or two, taking into acount parelax. The cards are basicly flat with the top of the PCI-E slot. so i think you could get it in the 1st slot no problem.

Thank's for all your help, it still didn't fit in the first slot but that's due to another problem with my case (now i know why people told me not to get Thermaltake), basically i had to raise the motherboard up and so now i'm going to have to take the motherboard out fit the gfx and slot it back in i think.

Anyway thank's for the help guy's, hopefully i'll be back on UT and CSS with 1337 graphic's soon. :)

in the bios , change 16-1-1-2 to 8-1-1-8 ( or something like that ) . Your card should be fine. I ran my card in second slot all the time. Both on Ultra-D and Expert.

Will that allow me to run at 16x?

Thank's

Just saw a Opteron 170 @ £180 which a pain too. :@

If you are running it in the second slot then you have to switch the settings in the bios to 8-4-NC-8 which will put the second slot at 8x. By default the are at 16-1-1-2 which puts the top slot at 16x and the other at 2x.
