Dell Release a 5K Monitor

Ah sorry, this one is 28, but Dell are working on a 55inch also.

55 inch 4k or 5k makes sense but 4k/5k at 28" is kind of silly.

I disagree.. I think when scaling gets figured out in Windows 8.1, people who want a much sharper looking display on their desktop will benefit from it. Most of us sit far away enough from our TVs for 4K to make very little difference.

With monitors it all comes down to taste but the majority of people i've spoken to about 4K think 4K or even 5K at 28" is a little daft.

It's not 55 inch, It's 28 inch and I can think of a few people who would buy it *Cough* Kaapstad ^_^

Not a chance.

I need a large screen as my favourite game is Civ5 and the 32" Dell works really well for this.

27" is far too small for 2560x1440 times four. That's roughly 220PPI - an impossible figure to work with at 100% scaling unless you plant your nose <12 inches from the panel. I've worked with 15.6" 4K notebooks, and the ability to maintain productivity when things get that small is a real challenge, never mind that a ton of software out there still doesn't work with <110PPI displays properly.

4K is still not mature enough in 2014 for me to recommend. How Dell expects 5K to work will be interesting to see.

For the record, I also own the LG 34UM95. 3440x1440 is amazing to look at and it suffers from none of the problems of 4K. Best monitor purchase I've made in over 10 years.

Im not intested in 100% scaling im interested in 200% scaling. Again hate to bring this back to an Apple product but my Retina Macbook Pro has a resolution of 2880x1800... But It uses HiDPI scaling at 200% to look like 1440x900 but with twice the pixels in that same space. That is what I am interested in for the future of 4K/5K. You will be surprised the difference a HiDPI/Retina experience will give versus the silly 5K native resolution on a 27inch panel.

On the negative side it has a slow response time (not that it bothers me as I play games like Civ5 and RTW2) and is a bit quirky when booting up and engaging Displayport 1.2 so I can use 4K 60htz.

I play those games too(nice to see im not the only one) but at 4k? Holy christ... R2 is hard enough to run at 1080p(game engine sucks) when you get those big battles... How the hell do you run that? lol

Civ5 is much easier to run though... its mainly all CPU. But yeah these games need as much screen real estate as possible. Makes everything much easier tacticly

Give it 5 years and it might be useful for me, I'm still waiting for 120hz and freesync/g-sync to come together before I upgrade but as for pixel density most smart phones are over 450ppi so having a monitor at over 200ppi seems quite sensible to me and not a waste at all.

Here I sit happy with 1920x1080 on a 27" screen . Maybe being a blind old man isn't such a bad thing anymore.
